I can't seem to find anyone with them anywhere. the original Axis are everywhere, but no Axis II.

was there a recall I'm not aware of or something?

helping a friend look for an inexpensive rifle with wood stock in 7mm-08 or other light recoil cartridge that will take deer, maybe bear and possibly moose. he's slight of frame and is recoil sensitive as shooting my Winchester 88 in .308 hurt him. he's shot .243 and .30-30 and he's okay with those. doesn't like lever, so that removes .30-30 unless there is a bolt action in .30-30 that's newish as they don't like buying used. his wife is thrifty, him not so much, LOL.

they're a bit OCD as well, so picky. spent the weekend shouldering rifles and has come back with a dislike of composite stocks, but I'm working on them to get an Axis II in the cartridge they like and then swap out the plastic stock for a Boyd's wood or laminate.

he's also limited in funds, being on disability and want to hunt for sustenance, which curtails their options to most entry level rifles which are all plastic stocks.

I am checking the EE every day, but nothing has caught my eye for them to consider. doesn't like used, but is open to the right rifle.

Cabelas has axis ii in .243 in stock online. Not sure if youre anywhere near a cabelas to go shoulder it or at least to see I they'd have it in stock at your closest location. The 11 trophy hunter xp is on sale for only $30 more than the axis 2 and will be a nicer rifle.

I haven't received any of my Axis II models "yet" from my primary Savage importer. The second importer I source from is still taking "placing orders" for them - that tells me that Savage has not shipped any of their 2016 production run yet (at least for this model).

Second, for most of last year, at least two of the wholesalers I deal with were "dumping" the regular Axis at reduced prices - even got a couple dozen where they mounted scopes on bare rifles for an extra 1 cent (ya, billed a penny) - to throw on a cheap Bushnell with rings - just to get rid of the rifles.

So it's possible that most other shops were like me and simply bought up the reduced wholesale priced Axis rifles which were (I'm thinking) almost 100 bucks cheaper a unit than the Axis II's - and when it comes to selling low price point/entry level rifles, most of our customers can't see the "value" in paying extra money for a better trigger - they look and see one priced at say $350 and at $425 and you can't convince them that it would cost them $150 in the aftermarket to put (essentially) the same trigger in that $350 rifle.

In the entry market the absolute lowest price wins (sells) - I sell dozens of Axis and 783 (lowest price on the shelf) - less Patriots (about 25 bucks more), even less American's (about 50 bucks more) and only the occasional Axis II - and if they don't "move" they aren't worth tying up "money" in.

Just one guys perspective.

Recoil sensitive, thrifty, doesn't like used, doesn't like lever action, dislikes synthetic, OCD and picky........ Wow.

An Axis 2 in a Boyd's stock is likely going to be more $ than you think, then add a scope.

Ammo for 7mm-08 isn't the cheapest either.
A decent 308 with a good recoil pad would get my vote. Those M88's can have a bit
of a snap to them with the low comb.

Since when is hunting for sustenance viable from a monetary perspective unless you live in the right rural area?

Sounds like this guy is living in a fantasy land; wants a budget rifle that doesn't kick and has a nice wooden stock. Going to have to get over at least one if not all of his criteria if he wants a decent gun.

An axis with boyds is up in X bolt territory. I'm sure there are rifle and scope combos in Ruger 77 or X bolt that would be in the same price range.

tell your friend "He's Dreaming". Decent wood commands a higher price. If that recoil sensitive hes stuck with a 243 cause the cost of ammo for anything milder than 308 (ie 7-08, 25-06, 270) is going to be to much money for him. Buy once cry once applies here. if he doesnt like used or entry level rifles hes stuck buying in the 800 plus area. Unless he wants to hunt with a 20 gauge pump!! My suggestions are a vanguard sporter or deluxe, model 700 bdl, model 70, or tikka hunter. Dont forget a decent scope will run another 400ish plus rings and bases $100. If your friend wants to hunt hes gonna have to come back to reality and realize hes gotta spend some $$ or lower his standards.

Axis 1 $350.
Boyds $250
Decent glass $350 min.
Rings and bases $100

For $600 you can get a nice used rifle. Or even a ab3. If he can't afford much for ammo 7mm-08 isn't really a good choice. What I have seen runs $30 and on up per box.

Just seen some axis II and they are $500+

i bought an axis II .270win back in february from cabela's complete with weaver kaspa scope. still shows online as "in stock"

I've got an axis2 for thr gf in the youth stock, .243
Wasnt cheap but all that fits her.

Less than impressed with the feel of it.
Especially considering it was only 200$ less than I paid for a T3 Lite w/4-12 monarch up top.

Being on a budget doesn't have to limit him if he has patience and let's go of the whole "doesnt like used"
Especially here on CGN, many of the guys here look after their stuff, and even then, an odd ding in the wood or a dirty, cleanable bore aren't much to fuss over.

Complaining that the recoil of a .308 hurt him is probably because the stock is not adjusted at the proper lenght for him..., the recoil of a .308 is nothing..., he could also add a muzzle break to reduce some recoil...

Have your looked at the Patriots?

Absolute crap... bought one for my son and brought it back without firing a shot... absolute garbage... bought him a Winchester 70 Featherweight for the same money used... "used" is a far better way to go than "budget" IMO.

A cheap .308 Axis I at $350 will absolutly do the job.

or a beautiful SKS , 7,62x39 will take down a deer or a bear, cheap-no recoil- wood stock - cheap ammo
