I had about 7 of them over the years. Some great buys at discount prices as they fell out of favour with the ammo supplies. Some heavy barreled Marlins, some NEF single shots, and some Savages. I've been looking for a sporter weight Savage with sights for quite some time. There's a left handy heavy barrel Savage at Gagnons, and a heavy barrel right hand one at P&D. My wanted ads on the EE haven't turned any up. Who is sitting on all of these?

I just "bumped" my WTB ad for an R-55 in 17M2, a rifle I didn't even know existed until last year....but I know what you mean. There used to always be a couple in the EE no matter when you looked, just hasn't been the case lately. IN looking as often as I do, I've ended-up talking to guys who have them, who are also looking for specific guns...even in one case, a guy who has more than 1 of the same rifle just because he digs them. lol I bought one of his duplicates a year or two back, a Marlin 917M2. The second of those I've owned, only not letting this one go. Like the first one, this gun got a Rifle Basix trigger, and is a dandy shooter. Heavy though.

I searched a long time for an NEF in 17M2 and gave up. Figured it was the right rifle to own for such a hard-to-get ammo. A chore just to get through 50 rounds. lol I'd still like to own one. Speaking of rifles I've stopped searching for, a CZ452 Varmint in 17M2. Stopped short of bringing one up from the US, would probably cost around $800 when the dust settles, after fees/exchange. I'm into the idea, but not $800 into it.

I have never seen a box of that ammo for sale yet. Do you guys get semi-regular ammo supply in the big centers? I would love to own one but I have a few cheaper door stops......

VERY hit or miss...mostly miss. lol There are a few dealers here in Ontario who seem to order all they can get from Hornady.....but since it's run so infrequently, that might be once a year. It shows up, gets gobbled up, then the wait is on again. I'm in gun shops maybe once or twice a month on average if you include Bass Pro and Cabela's. I maybe see it on a shelf once a year. Even saw some overpriced stuff on consignment in my LGS and bought that too. I think the trick is to get your order in with someone like SFRC, then play the waiting game.

The 17HM2 popularity suffers from the fact that it came into the world after the more ubiquitous 17HMR. There are simply more HMR's out there and the HM2 was never as well-known and popular. Ammo for the 17HMR is usually more widely available. The 17HM2 is basically a CCI Stinger necked down to take a 17 grain bullet, while the HMR is a .22WMR necked down to take a 17 or 20 grain bullet. At first there were a number of different labels for 17HM2: CCI, Hornady, and Federal (all loaded by CCI), and Remington and Eley (both loaded by Eley). Today I think only CCI and Hornady make 17M2.

Perhaps since the 17HMR came out first, shoots flatter and faster, and has kept the lion's share of the market, there aren't any new models of rifles from the major manufacturers made in 17HM2. For a while there were models offered by rifle makers in 17HM2, but now they are almost always only available on the used market. And it would appear that owners of 17HM2 don't like to part with them (so long as they can find ammo).

Today I think only CCI and Hornady make 17M2.

I've spoken to Hornady a few times on the topic, emailed them, etc. Between what they've told me and reading between the lines, it sounds as though Hornady make the .17cal bullets themselves, but that's where their involvement ends. CCI manufactures the Hornady-branded rimfire ammo. (including 17HMR, and 22WMR)

I've seen CCI-branded 17M2, but maybe once or twice since I started looking semi-seriously about 5-6 years ago.

I probably have about 800 rounds of Hornady 17M2 on hand, but have a lead on 500 more I may grab while the opportunity is there. I put allot more time into searching for 17M2 ammo than I do actually shooting 17M2. lol

I picked up a Marlin 917 a year ago after I built up 2000 rounds of ammo. I then installed a Lilja heavy barrel onto a 455 Varmint, but I need to bed it. A couple weeks ago on RFC there was a gent that said his 452 Varmint in 17M2 was his 'least favorite' of his CZ's so I sent him a PM and did a deal. It was in mint shape, fired less than a brick and is wearing a Weaver T24. It made it to Prophet River's exporter in Washington, just have to count days until it crosses the border and ends up in my hands.

I saw that remark, and commented in that thread too. lol I know the exact gun, and now officially hate PGW Steve. :)

3screws if it makes you feel any better I still have the Marlin Heavy SS I bought from you. Then I was able to score a CZ American from Prophet River. However a guy called PGW keeps harassing me to sell the CZ. Now maybe he'll leave me alone!

Neither are for sale! Oh and I have about 10,000 stocked up. Close to 1/2 are Eley. You guys are making me wish it was gopher time. Sooooon......

^I hope that wasn't recently...I've been bugging PR about a CZ in 17M2 for some time! :)

No 22LR a few years ago now. I saw a place in the US advertising them, got ahold of Clay, who got ahold of them and some time later I had one! I'd have to look for the exact date but it's likely 5 years ago.

Just razzing you, Clay's always been superb to deal with. I asked a few times to see if he could find one for me down there, just none to be had.

One of my hunting partners has one, that I found him in like new condition,I doubt that he has fired more than a few boxes of ammunition through it. I have owned six 17mach2 rifles, but the only one that I kept was my Cooper. I had over 20,000 rounds of Eley loads at one time, and I bought some more a couple of ears ago, but I am down to about 15,000 rounds of Eley now. I could easily double my money on the ammunition, but I enjoy shooting the gun to much to sell any of it.

Looks like a nice Winchester but outside of the price range of aknockanout Savage. I might take you up on that Marlin Scott....

Clay is A1 to deal with all around also!

If I get the barrel into the lathe i'll have a BRNO #1 in 17M2. Been sitting on the reamer and gauges for some time as well as a GM 17 cal barrel. Hopefully it will get done this spring.
