I Need to get a shot gun to play with and I want to go the single shot route.

As for size of shell what is the cheapest (I haven't been around them much)

I was thinking of going with the 12 guage because it is just so common.

For use I think it will mainly be just a gun to take to the gopher patch and just play to get familiar with another type of gun. So I don't need a 12 guage that was just my first instinct.

I've seen some 4 10 shotgun cheap $150~. Will the 4 10 accept 45 colt (I've done a bit of reading) or is it only certain guns.

Hnr or nef. Same gun. 12ga and 20ga are the cheapest by far. 410 is for grouse on the ground. And its 2-3 times the price for 1/2 the shot. Baikal 18 series are dependable cheap guns as well

Which is cheaper between 20 and 12 guage. Also which would be more enjoyable for a shorter smaller guy like myself...

I have shot 12 gauge magnums befor and I managed but it wasn't the most enjoyable. For quantity which would be better to go shoot for a day.

I have looked into NEF a bit, how much do extra barrels cost if I wanted to give anouther caliber a try?

Trap loads 12ga and 20 ga are the same price in my area. The basrrels on the hnr's must be/should be fitted at the factory. Some have had no issues switching them but others need fitting. I'm not sure the cost involved but for me the hassel isn't worth it. I'd just buy another gun

A 12ga single shot is no big deal when hunting as your not taking shot after shot usually and your mind is more focused on your target. But if you plan to shoot it a lot and your sensitive to recoil the 12ga wont be much fun after half a box of shells. Singles tend to be very light and recoil will be more abrupt. I have an H&R 20ga that I love for the fact that its so light and easy to carry in the bush when grouse hunting, and you can shoot it all day and not think about it.

Like I said, I'd rather shoot 20ga out of a single all day than a 12ga. And as far as barrels go, good luck finding them seperate. I dont know what your budget is like but the NEF/H&R line of shotguns are pretty affordable for most people. I think you would be better off buying a complete shotgun in a different gauge instead of trying to find replacement barrels. Which I'm sure arn't much less than a complete setup anyways.

for new single shotguns, check out the baikal and NEF/H&R, both priced under $150

otherwise be on the lookout for a cooey 84 on the EE, usually $100

ive shot nothing but a 12ga since i was 11 shot, buckshot and slugs

12ga is cheap only thing worth reloading in 12ga is hunting loads and buckshot and slugs

20ga is a little more on price and its one you mite want to reload

28ga and .410 you almost have to reload

weight is everything single shots are lighter then pumps and they will give more recoil also gun fit can make more of a issue too some different length slip on recoil pads could help this

Check the Equipment Exchange on here. I bought a single shot 12g in decent shape for 110 bucks SHIPPED

I was just going to suggest a used Cooey. EE can be pricey. If you can find one locally and try it first, you might be better off. As for recoil, 12 gauge light target loads (1oz of shot with 2.75 or 3 DRAM equivalence) is not bad for shooting all day. I've seen small 110lbs women handle them OK for trap and skeet in the same day. A good recoil pad can also help.

Picked up my Baikal 12 ga for $130 plus tax. This gun is very light and boy does she kick like a mule even with 2 3/4 #8 target loads so I strongly suggest a good recoil pad.

PM sent...
When someone starts asking if they should go 12G or, 20G I push them towards a 12.

Cheaper to shoot, abundant choices in ammo (almost everywhere), and actually a touch more of "killery" to boot.

Go to shows, post an ad in the EE, etc...(or buy mine..lol) you'll find an affordable and fun gun.

The judge is not the only .410 that can handle .45 colt. H&R makes a single shot that has irons and handles both. Intresting barrle if i remember too. different rifleing so the shot cup does not spin as much. Only ever seen one thought.

Not many. How about .410 and 22LR? If you're shooting gophers or whatnot, the 22LR is dirt cheap. Or you can swap barrels and shoot .410 if you want more bang and to spend more money...

$225 US retail, don't know what it would cost here or who to buy one from. They also sell a 20ga/22LR, for the same price, which might make more sense unless you're set on the small .410 loads.

Depending on local, some other shotguns are as cheap/cheaper than a single. Lots of bolt action sell for $100. The stevens bolt even less. Some good old pumps sell for $150. Check out some gun shows or call around to some buddies.

I agree with a j cave. There are deals to be had out there in shotguns other then single shot.
A maverick 12Ga pump was my first gun back when I started out and it can be used for everything that walks or flies in most parts of canada

they are right around $200 new and who knows what kind of deal you could get for a used one
