hey guys,

i just qualified for the 200/300m range at Sharon today and realized that a bipod is not good enough so i am looking for a quality rest and bags. im thinking something like a Sinclair or equivalent along with the appropriate bags (i was looking at the edgewood front and rear bags). anywhere you guys can recommend? im trying to avoid ordering from Brownells as i would like to give my business to a canadian if possible.

Bipod and rear bag is all we use. Works great. Pretty much the go to setup for most people. What was it that you found you did not like about the Bipod?

What kind of shooting are you going to be doing?

There's bipods and then there's bipods. A good F-class style is much, much better than say a little flip leg unit.
Tripod rifle rests have their own issues and tricks to content with for good accuracy and repeatability.

Protektor bags are fairly economical, Mystic precision sells them.
Higher end and very popular is Edgewood, but they're $$$ and I'm not sure if they have a Canadian dealer now or not. I think bringing a minigater from the US is over $300 now...

You can always make your own rest/bags too. A big bag of sand costs like $5 at Rona. Mine (rear bag) is sand inside two ziplocks, then put inside an old wool sock. If you've got any sewing skills you could make a front rest from an old pair of pants.

A bipod and a cheap rear bag filled with regular sand doesn't even remotely compair to a quality bench rest and edgewood bags filled with heavy sand. Your best bet is to order from Sinclairs or Brownells as I am not aware of anyone in Canada who sells these items.

I also order from Sinclair for that kind of stuff.
They have quality pedestal rests designed for Bench Rest shooting.

I rather support guys in the shooting community that make gear :)

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but if I ever want money for ammo then I have to be thrifty with other stuff, such as bags. Such is the life of a poor university student though...

Im also a big fan of repurposing stuff, my adjustable front rest is made from an old scissor jack from a chevy cavalier...

A member on here makes superb front rests for use in BR or F-Open. Gentleman is McD and he has been on here since 04 but doesn't post much. If you reach out to him he will likely supply you with the best front rest you will ever own.

Having said that, I guarantee that a good bipod will work perfectly. For Tactical style there is none better than the LRA (the Atlas is a toy compared to it and, yes, I have two of each ! ) but the absolute finest of the fine is the Remple. Stick that on your fore-end and you will feel like you ARE shooting from a rest. The remainder of the bipods on the market vary from very good (Dolphin Trakker etc) on downwards.

It depends on what discipline your shooting??? If it's benchrest then you need a front rest and rear rest. Sincler has some of the better rests.. These are expensive but it's a must have in BR shooting.
Enjoy.

I'm currently running a Remple, a MPod, and a Cowan pedestal. The Remple is rock solid, but a heavy beast for a bipod. The MPod is very stable and very light. The Cowan is an great pedestal with an interesting story. Joe Cowan runs a machining school in Altoona, PA and the rests he sells go to fund the school. I've had a few conversations with him over the years. He's a super nice guy with a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks,
Cal.

Not the best pic of the McD rest but here you go
