The color of the Dark Garnet is closest to the classic Russian red. To get the classic red look, I first finished the birch stock with Pine Tar (TSC carries it, its used for protecting horse hoof) Pine tar needs to be thinned quite a bit in order to paint it on your stock. Pine tar does not dry well at all, I helped drying using a heat gun, but you need to be careful not to bubble or burn the tar. When its still really warn take a clean rag and wipe the access tar off the stock. Again the tar does not totally dry, it has a slight tacky feel. Next, mix your shellac with denatured alcohol (look up "pound cut for shellac") I added some Iodine to the shellac mix to get the "red" look, mix by feel, test on birch. When mixing Iodine, do a bit (few drops at a time) to get the red your looking for.
I will post the results from my project later today.
