Trap and skeet are games, that require a properly laid out field to play. As for how long it takes for the clays to break down, the so called biodegradable clays take two years to break down, and the regular clays take longer.

Most clubs charge a daily guest fee, if you are not a member (no daily fee if you are). The clubs I have shot at charge 5-10$ per day, plus a fee for a round of trap or skeet (25 clay birds) usually 5$. They supply the birds, you bring your own shells. So, a typical afternoon of skeet or trap shooting would cost ~ 20$ plus the cost of shells.

Actually the name clay targets is kind of misleading as they are no longer made from clay. Back before the turn of the century (20th) shooters experimented with all sorts of targets to replace the targets originally used, sparrows, starlings and pigeons! All sorts of targets were tried including glass balls stuffed with various things like feathers etc. Then a fellow named Ligowski invented the clay target. They were constructed of clay and baked in a kiln but unfortunately they were hard to break with the standard loads of the day which by the way were heavier than the loads we use today. They used to shoot 1 1/4 oz loads back in the day. A new target was needed that could hold together from a high speed launch yet break easily with just a couple pellets. Enter the target we know today. Made from a mix of crushed limestone and pitch. These targets don't actually break down as they are limestone and in a manner neither do biodegradables as the main ingredient in biodegradables is sulphur and suphur does not biodegrade either. Go to a former club ground that has been out of operation for years and you will find out though you may not see the target particles for grass or weeds having grown up you will hear and feel them crunching underfoot. Nothing short of scraping them along with the top layer of earth and removing them entirely or bulldozing earth over them will get rid of them. Of course weeds and trees springing up hide them but they are always there even in the new layer of soil produced by falling leaves and decaying weeds and grasses.

Really. Many small towns and RM's have what they call a refuse grounds many miles out of the town. I said "Look at it on maps, whats around it, is it crown/town property, that sort of thing, be respectful and safe." Geezus, the negativity and combativeness here on every subject is astounding, Along with the RCMP, Libs and CFO it's some other shooters that make this hobby less enjoyable. Raising a cautionary "you might run into this, look out for that" like you did is one thing but being a Kunt about it is another.

They're around Mt Laurier. So that's about a 220km hike from the city. I'd love to tell you where they are, but it's almost impossible to describe. I was taken there by locals, and I now know the way. I can show you if you want, but you have to be up there, and we now need to wait for the snow to melt, as the way to the grounds is not cleared in winter.
Wow. Now that's a good price. Maybe you're right. I should look for a better place. I wonder if real trap and skeet clubs would be more affordable around here, rather than a clay field and me bringing me own thrower
I am surprised that some people are actually paying those kind of prices to bring their own thrower and clays to a field to shoot. At least if you go to a proper trap or skeet field, you get to play the actual games of trap and skeet.
