Hey Guys,

I just got my hunting license and I am eager to get out and hunt some ducks for starters. I'm in Maple Ridge, where should I go? Also a list of items needed aside from Shotty, ammo suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Nima

I am learning this new hobby as well, and would also appreciate input on this thread. it would seem like duck hunting is a dying art in the lower mainland.

I have heard that there is a private club in Pitt Meadows, but you must join to be a member, and they only do scheduled hunts.

I have also heard of duck-hunting near Mission, but I have also heard people complain about the quality of the ducks in that area.

As for gear, what I believe you need to get started:

- Waders (comfortable ones)
- duck Call
- Decoys

To get you started you need a couple decoys say 12 for puddle ducks and 36 for divers, buy a good quality call (not one bought for 10.99 @ CT) learn to use it, borrow a canoe, paddle a lkely looking marsh at prime time ( dawn or dusk and take note of where the ducks are, be right back in that same spot the next morning set up before shooting light, hopefully the quackers will come to see you. Scoting is a key part of waterfowling, if you are where the birds are you oly need one or two good decoys.

Does anyone know of people who successfully duck hunt from an ocean kayak? I'm thinking puddle ducks, in freshwater estuaries...

Another Q for yah, you mention diving ducks. I heard that those are not good eating, because their diet is mostly fish, so they taste fishy and gross??

Yeah, I heard the same about those ducks, but then I was told not to worry about it immediately after, like their diet changes. Confusing.

Also, I was told where the Chehalis and Harrison meet is supposed to have a lot of ducks but you need a boat.

Pitt Meadows and Mission area sound great. Anyone have any specifics on these areas?

THe Chehalis flats have lots of mallards but they eat rotten dog salmon, forget that. You need a Waterfowl licence(Post office),and a Fraser Valley Permit, you must show proof of 1,000,000$ public liability ins.(Gun club ins.,or take your house hold policy it usually has at least that much coverage. You can also get the insurance by joining the BCWF).The area north of you(Pitt Polder) can have good shooting, check the map and Regs that come with the Fraser Valley Permit.Duck hunting in the Fraser Valley is highly regulated but you can still have some good shooting.Be sure of exactly where you are,and don't trespass!Good Luck,Mur

Say what now?

is that a peculiarity to Fraser Valley - hadn't heard of such a thing in Alberta

Thanks Mur,

I live near Pitt, and in checking the regs, its mostly parkland or private land. Is their any legal public land you can share info on??

I am familiar with the Insurance requirement, I don't know about Alberta, but it is a BC Provincial regulation to have a minimum specified liability insurance.

Ducks

It's for the Fraser Valley only,I don't need it here in the Interior but I'll have to buy one when I come to the Coast in March to hunt Brant.Make sure you get the map that comes with it,it will show you all open and closed areas, and will give you the open days for Pitt Polder which does have public shooting.A canoe or skiff would be handy for the area.I don't advise hunting the salt marshes without someone who knows the area, you can get in a lot of trouble with the tides and weather.Good luck

Hey Rutger,

Where do you suggest that I go for a good set of waders? Quality at the best price would be appreciated.

i got a pair(waders) at walmart last season and im still using then this season.bottoms of them are pretty thin but easily fixed with a set of insoles.good to start out with.also good hunting in ladner .

I checked out the Wally World in Coquitlam and they didn't have any. Maybe another store would.

don't screw around with crappy waders....... give the boys at berry's bait and tackle a call 604 273 5901 , I worked for them for several years slingin fishin tackle, waders ect. 6road and westminster. You want some good quality neoprene. Camo waders would be good but brown is not so bad either. Best waders on the market bar none are made in Langley by Bare Fitzwright.... or just Bare for short. I fish for salmon and steelhead in local rivers as well as float tube flyfishing interior b.c. lakes for trout..... my waders get easily 75 to 100 days of use every year. The last pair of waders i bought...... Bare waders...... and that was 5 years ago..... they have never needed a repair and still have years of service in them ...... plus the lifetime warranty is a good thing.
also, a great club to get a membership at if you are getting into duck goose hunting is the Ladner rod and gun club as well as the richmond rod and gun club. Waterfowl hunting and general shotgunning, trap/skeet is what most of thier members specialize in.

Yeah, the more I research the more I realize that putting money into products that last are more beneficial than buying something cheap for right now. I will try to go by there next time I pass new west.

Go to huntingbc.ca and ask the same question.

Read the waterfowl forum section.

There are some very knowledgeable people there.

A fellow called Crazy Farmer seems to know what is going on out your way.
