Where do I start, where do I begin?

Hey all I'm happy I found this place, I've always been interested in sniper rifles and long distance shooting. I have lots of hobbies to keep me busy but lately I've been more and more curious about this sport. I'd like to learn as much as possible about this sport but am completely clueless where to start. I've never been hunting or shot a gun before and I live in Toronto.

..Sunday morning I'm waking up...
Can't even focus on my coffee cup...
Don't even know who's bed I'm in...
Where do I start where do I begin....

-Dust/Chemical brother. Nice title for your post, reminded me of the song so I though i'd say hi and sing along.

A couple of words of advice for a newbie on this board.

1. You (like me) are from Toronto and will take a lot of flak for it here by other members. You're not alone.
2. Sniper rifle is a loaded term. It is politically unsuitable as Sniper refers to the man doing a job. The rifle is a rifle and using it is marksmanship, not sniping. This is more technically corrent and more politcally appropriate. You'll find out that we are pretty much all raging pro gun people so yes the terminology counts.
3. I think the longest range you can find near the GTA is my club, the Oshawa Skeet and Gun Club as they have 300 yard range. Most are shoter than that. 300 yard is not that far.

As for where to start there is lots you can do.

- Ask people in the GTA for a day out. (Asking here is a good idea)
- Some ranges (Target sports I think) do range rentals so you can get a feel for it.
- Get your license (PAL) from your provider of choice. I recommend www.guns.to
- Buy a gun, then buy some more and get ammo and cleaning supplies.
- Get a range membership or two
- Join the CSSA and NFA (Canadian pro-firearms organizations)
- Read lots and lots.

Welcome to the forums.

Welcome to the CGN Sqwert. Take a tour of the forums and especially the long range shooting forum. You will find a wealth of info here and a ton of good guys who will help you along the way. I hope you really get hooked on shooting as the more shooters the better for the sport and for gun owners in general. Good luck with your new hobby.

Have deep pockets is my suggestion. It's going to cost a far amount in Ammo may want to look right away into the reloading idea. If your not married don't get married. All the money you thought you had is now gone. Othe rthen that enjoy the addiction:D

You got it drvrage, that's the song but I don't have a prize for you sorry dude!

Hey guys thanks for the info, Yes marksmanship is what I'm interested in.

So I can ask ask people on the forum for a day out at a range? That's strangely cool considering it's a gun! So how does that work?

So are there any books you recommend that I should read on the subject?

I'm going to look into the license thanks again!

If you are interested in long range shooting, you may also want to consider the Ontario Rifle Association (ORA). They hold Intro days at Base Borden near Barrie (Angus), where you can try long range shooting (300yds) without a requirement to possess a PAL/RPAL. Will give you a real feel for it, and whether it suits you or not.

Click on event schedule. I think there is one running October 17th.

Thanks Busta Capp I'll check out that link, that sounds like it's right up my alley.
Chriscris thanks but I have to work on Sunday

I agree with all the posts.

Spend time reading the threads that interest you on this site. You won't find a better repository of firearms information on The Internet--and that includes American sites.

Take the PAL and RPAL courses and get your licence.

The learning will never end. But, it's one heck of a lot more interesting than golf.
