You could always join one or two of the US based forums. I have purchased several items from individuals in the US from those sales threads on those forums. Ive never been screwed by a US seller, I have however been conned by a Canadian seller when i was sold a greatly over-graded item by a member of this site.
Keep in mind there are things you cant import legally by both countries, but other things are ever changing. Eg. If its listed as for an M14 its bad, if its listed for an M1A its in a grey zone. Stay away from bad stuff and only go for the deals, I picked up a new ARMS 18 for $190 including shipping.
