Where do you go to shoot long range? Innawoods or @ a range?

Living in the lower mainland there aren't really any ranges that I would consider long range anywhere close and plus I'm a bit of a cowardly lion for not wanting to not join a club because I don't really wanna perform certain range duties, mainly being responsible for RO duties. Just curious where people are going to shoot.

Follow up, what do you typically use for targets wherever you do go shooting? Steel or paper targets?

Your gonna have a hard time prying top secret info from people. Good spots are hard to find. Gotta get out and explore.

OH ha ha, I've got a spot in the woods, well a few actually that I go to shoot. The post is more actually about the second question of what people are shooting for targets. I spent all of the money on all of the gear for long range shooting especially quite a bit on my rifle and I am wondering if it would be worth it to go out and get myself a steel target to bang away on.

I take my SKSs, .22 and shotgun out in the bush to shoot. I'm in the Lower Mainland too... I don't much care for Sylvester Rd a bit too busy for my liking. I venture out to Chilliwack rd. New regs say you have to be 800 M off the rd, but there a still quite a few places to go. We shoot all kinds of stuff for targets... water filled milk jugs for the shotgun & clays....paper targets for the .22 & SKS. We're planning on getting so resetting steel targets though for the .22

Shoot in the woods. Won't share locations. Learned that my hard work can't be for the benefit of others.

No issues joining a club, volunteering, competing, etc. Problem is ranges don't accept people around here unless you drive 2.5 hours.

For the most part I use paper targets as I am still kinda sighting in my rifle, but I was thinking of getting some steel targets for longer ranges after I am done sighting in.

One of the reasons I live in S Alberta. Unlimited shooting distances. :D

I've got permanent targets set in a few spots.
spot 1- 300yd target board, 36"x36", 6"steel plate attached top center.
spot 2- all from same firing line,
300yd board
600yd board with 6" and 16" gongs attached
700yd board
spot 3- same firing line
6" and 16" gongs hanging from chain between two trees at 630yd
4'x8 board at 890yd
16" gong at 890, hanging between trees

All my targets are hike in. For true bragging rights, we hang paper on the boards. Whoever hikes the paper in, also spots for the shooter. We have a dugout at 890 and use radios.
My steel is only good for non magnum and I won't use it any closer than I am, with the exception of .22s on my portable gongs.

I prefer shooting out in the bush. I've been lucky enough to find a spot that I can drive my steel to and set up in dead end clearcut landings. I quick trip across the valley and I have a 1000-1600 yard range depending on where I set up. The only downfall (if you want to call it that) is that it's a little too thick for targets inside of 1000 yards.
