Hi, I just received my Pal license and immediately my first rifle, a 1941 Mauser ar k98k. I was wondering if anybody knew of a gun store around the tri-cities area, maple ridge or mission, that would have the appropriate cleaning utensils ie: cleaning rod, brushes, bore guide, solvents etc... Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

the only thing that is different from your 30 caliber cleaning kit is the brush - everything else is the same- you just need a 32 caliber brush( 32 is close enough to 8mm, which is 323)- all teh solvents, jags, etc are the same-check out canadian tire until you can get a proper rod like a dewey which is 28 caliber-

I would love to see pictures of your Kar98k. My first milsurp was a 1940 J.P. Sauer & Sohn and I still have her two years later and she is one heck of a wonderful shooter.

As for cleaning supplies, I use the Outers .30 caliber cleaning kit combined with a 12 gauge cleaning patch (I find the patches that come with the .30 cal kit are not tight enough for my 8mm Mauser rifles). It can be a really tight fit with the 12 gauge patch but the bore comes out really clean afterwards. The solvent I use is Hoppes # 9.

I picked my supplies up from Le Barons but I think you can find them at just about any gun shop or even at Canadian tire.

Thanks for the help on which cleaning kit to acquire. My apologizes for not providing pics, I took a few tonight and I will post them tomorrow after I figure out the whole uploading thing...

i just use old bed sheets cut up- you need to be careful with patches as certain ones will stick in the bore- i found that out with the 35s the hard way- waffle weave, which is a tight fit anyway, any piece of flannel will do, and don't see-saw the rod back and forth - one directin only, from breech to muzzle

If you're around Vancouver, try Reliable Gun & Tackle (site sponsor- see banners above) on Fraser & Kingsway, or Italian Sporting Goods on Renfrew.

x2 on the Dewey rods. They're excellent.

Greetings,

I recently acquired a Yugoslav K 98 ( MBO 48 ) from Marstar. After scoping it it now shoots sub moa at 100m. These rifles are fine shooters, were made as prototypes for the Egyptians. I believe they are about. $400.00 Can. In my opinion, they are well worth the money. The comments at the range are interesting, these guns are as they were manufactured in 1950 ( once you get the cosmoline out) and are in pristine condition. Ammo is not always available I now reload and have quite successfully used 30/06 cases renecked to 8/57. Anyway I am now a dedicated Mauser guy, good luck.

Your right, the patches do get stuck sometimes, especially if you push them too far out of the muzzle when cleaning from the breach end as they will not go back in again. The patch is so tight with a pass from the breach to the muzzle that I do not need to go back again.

It has worked great for removing the gunk after firing surplus ammo.

I use the Outers patches that came with the kit to clean everything from my .22 up to my Enfields and they suit that purpose quite well.

Some pics of said rifle.

Sweet. My 41 has the laminate stock too but the older style butt plate. I don't see the Russian Capture "X" - is this a matched numbers rifle?

Have you shot it? I took mine out yesterday but I'm thinking I need laser eye surgery to see down those darned V shaped sights after being spoiled on the M-14!

As soon as I saw that my license had come in the mail, I phoned my buddy up who was holding it in his name, got it transferred over to my name and then we went to the bush for a shoot.

The barrel matches the action, but that's where it ends. There is no "x".

Those V shaped sights are going to take some getting used to for sure.

Out of all the variants of this rifle this is my favorite setup.

Up next will be a No4 mk1 Long Branch, and then an m14 or a Garand but not sure,
