I'm looking to buy a new AR and want one with a 14.5" barrel that does not come with a permanently attached flash hider. I want a high quality brand like LMT, Noveske, Colt, Sabre Defense but the only ones available new in Canada are 16" barrels. Anyone know where I can buy one new?

I have read some guys buy the 16's and have a smith chop them down no problems. Also Dlask sells 14.5's just buy the barrel and swap it out if you don't like the idea of chopping it.

You are pretty much stuck with the EE or a private sale. Unless you are LEO. I think Questar has(had) some 14.7" guns with the permanent flash hider. Good luck.

I was just thinking - the 7" and 10.5" AR pistols can be exported from the US, right? I think Questar mentioned having trouble getting the permits, but they still seem to manage to get some RRA pistols through.

If an AR pistol was made with a 14.5" barrel, then it should be as hard or easy to import from the US as one of the 7 or 10.5" AR pistols, right? Or am I missing something blindingly obvious?

It is Perfectly legal in Canada to have an AR upper with a 14.5" barrel. Or 11.5. Or 10.5, or 9", or 7", etc..
The problem is the supply, and the US state department. The state department will NOT allow the export of upper recievers with barrels shorter than 16" without an end user certificate, which are only available to military/LE. Since most AR15 manufacturers are American, that basically screws all of us over. There is the option of Dlask, but...well....search their name on this site, and read the threads. I don't have any personal experience with Dlask AR parts, but I'm wary from what I've heard.
However, it is possible to get your hands on Short barrels. I'm not sure how, because I thought that the State department restrictions covered everything, but I guess not. I'm fairly certain that Wolverine Supply has them available, and I've heard that Questar does as well.
What you should NOT do, is have the barrel cut down. Most AR15 barrels are chrome lined. This is good for a shooter, because chrome lined barrels stand up much better than non-chrome lined barrels to the fast shooting, and high mileage that ARs are usually subjected too. Also, you don't have to worry about scratching a chrome lined bore with a steel cleaning rod, because the chrome is harder than the steel. The problem is that if you try to cut a chrome lined barrel, there's a very good chance of the chrome CHIPPING at the cut off point, and that, obviously, is not a good thing. If you took the barrel to a gunsmith, and asked them to turn it down, they would probably say no, for that exact reason.
Because of the problems with importing short barrels for AR15s, I was looking at trying to cut down several AR barrels as well, but the general consensus from gunsmiths & weapons techs that I talked to, was that I was better off buying a new (or used) barrel/upper.
SO...........I just wrote this to give you some perspective on WHY it's hard to get shorty uppers. Check with Questar, Wolverine, in fact, check ALL the AR15 dealers, and hopefully you find what you're after!
Good luck!

Tim

Where do you live? Hunters Sporting Goods in Surrey BC has a Bushmaster Upper with a 14.5" barrel. I think it's used.

I'll send Mark at Questar an e-mail about an LMT but I think I remember him saying that he is unable to get 14.5" barreled AR's. I live in Ottawa and there isn't much choice as far as AR's go.

Check with Wolverine I got an Armalite one last year, std screw on flash hider. It seems to be hit or miss with these items, might be quicker to get a 16" and have it cut down.

Does having a 16" chrome-lined barrel cut down to 14.5" cause any problems or could it cause any problems down the road?

These are longer being allowed in. The only people that Wolverine, Questar, Armseast, etc... are allowed to bring in short barrels for is LE/MIL. They aren't even allowed to bring in collapsible stocks anymore. Or even barrels with a 5.56mm chamber for crying out loud.

Your only option is to buy used, chop a barrel down, buy from Dlask, or have a barrel made for you.
