I am more of a shooter than a fisherman and have no idea where to buy higher end fishing gear in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Looking to buy some higher end Shimano rods and reels. I would like to try and avoid Wholesale Sports.

SIR is now Cabela's. If you want fancy, expensive fishing gear they can hook you up. Its cheaper now that you don't have to pay the import duty and taxes etc when you order from the states. What ya fishing for?

Two types of fishing, river fishing from the bank for Sturgeon. Decent rods for casting and strength and a spinning reel that will hold some line with a good brake. Second would just be lighter gear; a lot of sensitivity for vertical jigging from a boat for walleye.

Have a decent river fishing set-up for Sturgeon but do not have anything decent for walleye from a boat.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming.

It's been a couple years, but the best prices I've been able to find were buying from ebay stores. Shimano Stradics that were $200 give or take here I was getting for $75 shipped. I have a strong preference for G Loomis rods, but I like IMXs and GLXs for $120 a lot more than the inflated prices here. It might be a character flaw, but where I might balk at $200 for a spinning reel, give it to me for $75 and I'm likely to buy six.:runaway:

A friend pro-staffs Shimano equipment, and he can't even get me prices that good, on the "good ole boys network".

Fishin' Hole is about your best bet, if you know what you want.

I have found that decent walleye sized gear is easy to find, but anything suitable for lake trout or casting for pike has been an exercise in frustration. I was looking for a decent spincasting reel for my pike rod, and everything i could find that was reasonably priced, seemed to be tiny, or absolutely huge, for a 8 foot rod.

Seen almost nothing suitable for sturgeon fishing around the prairies.

Where you fishing for the sturgeon at? I usually try to get out on the Fraser when I am out that way. My best to date has been a 6 1/2 footer from shore.

Have thought about going after sturgeon on the North Sask, but never really got into fishing here in the prairies till recently, and really don't know where to go, so it ain't a happenin' thing.

Cheers

Dogleg,

Last gear I bought was from ebay. I am not an ebay fan, too much fake and knock-off crap that is being sold as well as all the scammers. I have had some really bad luck with things coming from the States and being broken or go missing (all legal non firearm parts). I can imagine what would happen if I ordered a 1 piece rod and it arrived in three or four.

Trevj,

I would be living the dream if I could do some sturgeon fishing in the Fraser River, that is where the big boys are at. I have to settle for the South Saskatchewan and fish off shore. Biggest to date has been 59 3/4 inches with a 25" girth. A big fish but just a baby as far as Sturgeon go. Average Sturgeon Dad and I catch seem to be about 25-30 pounds.

I fish for sturgeon in the fraser river where they will get up to 12 ft long and 700 lbs. Many people I see are using the shakespeare ugly stik. Army and navy sell them for around 100 dollars. I use a cheapo rod and decent spinning reel that will pull in 6 footers around 150 lbs.

Dogleg,

I can imagine what would happen if I ordered a 1 piece rod and it arrived in three or four.

In the case of a G Loomis, I'd swear a bit, then send it in for the no fault lifetime warranty. In the meantime I'd continue to fish with the ones that did make it. There's plenty of American businesses (non ebay) that are quite happy to blow Canadian prices out of the water, so to speak.
