Where to buy lead in Alberta

Are you looking for "commercial" lead, or looking for a place where you can buy pure (or as pure as you can get) scrounged from a scrapyard lead?

I don't know of any specific places, per say, in Alberta, but I would check out a scrapyard or two in my area. That's what I've done in the past, and will do in the future.

Plumbing lead and roofing lead are pretty good sources for pure lead, so if you live in an area where there's renovations going on in older neighbourhoods, chances are you'll find one or the other.

Couple of years ago there was mention of redoing the plumbing in the historic part of Brandon mb, because of all the "old lead pipes" in the area. If I lived closer to Brandon, I would have gone scrounging, by either talking to the work crews, or talking to the local scrap yard, or both. Sometimes the foreman will let you take away the heavy scrap, because they pay by the pound for removal, and some guys are pricks about it. Depends on the guy.

Some guys have a doctorate in scrounging, others, not so much.

I wish I was more helpful than this.

How much lead do you need?

IIRC, it was Canada Metal in Calgary that I bought some a couple years ago. New might cost more than scrap but I thought the price was decent.

These guys. Especially if you want a specific alloy. Save your time and money and buy the right stuff the first time. If it's just to cast and blast, scrounge.

Western Metals in Calgary, may have an Edmonton branch. They have 35lb ingots of lead, and 1lb sticks of tin. They will also custom blend, on a min qty basis, as they make boolits there as well. I went there to get lead for my Schuetzen rifle rather than scrounge around, it was a good move. Nowadays at the price of gas to run around, it is well worth it. The only thing I scrounge these days, is wheelweights every few yrs, from our tire shop.

If you're looking for minimum 500 lbs you can truck pure lead in from BC for a bit under $2/lb.
Western Metals was quite a bit more expensive when I talked to them. IIRC it was close to $4/lb. Might be worth your while if you only need smaller quantities.

I bet if you put the word out you could bring in 500lbs and split it up between enough people to make it reasonable. If you did I would be totally down for 100lbs

I could help arrange that if enough people are interested, would need at least 500 lbs total for it to be do-able. Split charges on a per/lb ratio. . It could be a group buy of sorts. The more weight we can get in the shipment, the better the price gets per pound.

I'm putting an order together for Metalex in BC and shipping to Camrose, AB. I can pick it up and bring to Edmonton. When I get some idea of quantity I will get a quote for lead and shipping. Gonna do this fast so don't take too long thinking about it. :)

Edit: ordered.

I just purchased about 150 lbs pure Lead from a Edmonton Scrappyard paid .35 cents per pound. 2 month ago in northern BC Scrapyard i paid .40 cts.

Last Summer I purchased Wheelweights in Victoria BC for .50cts a pound, totally useless stuff had to throw about 2/3 out, never again.

I get arround a lot and when I see a Scrappyard I hit it becouse shipping lead is way to expensive.

Cheers - K.

Best I can do around here is $1 per pound and one yard where I've got a connection gives me what ever lead is trading for that day. Typically $0.73 - $0.86 ish. At $0.30 or $0.40 a pound, I'd be taking everything I could.

Boat yards can be a good source for lead-old scrap keels and ballast weights are often pure lead and cheap. Another place, that I thought would be a fruitless exercise but wasn't, was placing an ad in a few local community magazines (as long as you dont mention what the scrap will be turned into!) The last time I did it the local church magazine came up trumps with nearly 400lbs of pure lead to collect-most of it was for free.
