I have a nice little camo model that my mother bought me for christmas a few years ago and i immediately noticed its really prone to jamming.I was looking at some upgrade parts from Volquartsen and emailed them but they dont ship to canada :(

Im looking for the hardened edge extractor and target hammer, hopefully one of you nutz know where i can get these or a company that can get me the Volquartsen parts :)

.
Jo-Brook Firearms in Brandon, Mb., has hammers and extractors for the Remington 597. Only a few more dollars than the suggested US prices too.
Phone number is 204-727-3552.

I really recommend the hammer as it takes the heavy trigger pull and really lightens it up --mine is a hair over two pounds now. I bought an extractor but my rifle has not had any problems with that area yet, but if it does, I will install the extractor.

It only takes about 5 minutes to install the hammer. Use a slightly smaller slave pin to line things up, then the factory pin can be installed.

Big thing with the 597 is DO NOT tighten the guide rod screws up too tight. You will bow the guide rods, causing them to drag on the bolt, resulting in FTE malfunctions. Just tighten them finger tight, then back off 1/4 turn. They will not work loose.

Forget about Remingtons 10 INCH POUNDS of pressure on the guide rod screws. That is .8 FOOT POUNDS of pressure and no one can really get it correct without very sensitive tools.

You should do the guide screw pressure loosening then try your rifle again. Put about 250 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags through it to break it in and see how it performs after that. Also, some people tend to jam the recoil springs up against the back of the bolt, and they drag slowing down the bolt when it comes back.

Thanks for the info. I've had my eye on a nice 597 at the local shop and was wondering about some upgraded parts.

So far I've heard good things about the 597 and it is a nice looking little rifle to plink with.

597 parts

I inquired to Jo Brook about 2 months ago about the same parts and they told me they weren't handling them right now unfortunately. I haven't found anywhere else yet either.

Try Milarms, I bought mine from them.
Also read the torque specs again, it is 0.8 foot pounds !!
I just backed off the guide rod screws, tightend the screws until they touched the rods, backed off a 1/4 turn and left them. No lube, no holding compound. Not a problem since, this was 2 years ago.

Thanks and im pretty sure i have a 3/8 torque wrench that will go that low.

You don't need the torque wrench. Just follow BALDABE's advice in the post above. Tighten them up, finger tight, until you just feel them touch, then back off 1/4 turn.

About 90% of the malfunctions in the 597 are guide rods too tight, magazines, recoil springs. Remington went to metal magazines from plastic ones. My old 1997 rifle still is using original plastic magazines and they function properly. Remington changed the shape of the ends of the recoil springs by enlarging them to a larger diameter because people jammed them when reassembling the rifle. Unfortunately, Remington could do nothing about the biggest problem, the owner of the rifle, who insisted on tightening up the screws that hold the guide rods in place.

I see at least a half-dozen Remington 597 rifles a year that are not functioning properly, and in most cases it comes down to these three things, with overtightened guide rod screws about 90% of the time. A couple of minutes to back off the guide rod screws, load it up, and it fires perfectly.

So, you asked for advice. I will repeat:

You should do the guide screw pressure loosening then try your rifle again. Put about 250 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags through it to break it in and see how it performs after that. Also, some people tend to jam the recoil springs up against the back of the bolt, and they drag slowing down the bolt when it comes back.
