Where to buy SKS

Hi, I'm new to this site, and after trying a SKS last hunting season during a Deer Drive I have been looking to buy one. The only place I seem to have found one is at S.I.R. They just received about one hundered this week of Chinese SKS Type 56 Semi-Automatic Rifle. Has anyone had any experience in purchasing any rifles from them before??? Also, its my understanding that you can find new norinco Sks's, which one is better, the new ones or a surplus one. Any info you can give me would be great.:)

Hey heavy,
#### me, I had this nice long reply all written out and I lost it. Sorry.
check out P&D enterprises, P&S militaria, & milarm.

I bought a norinco sks from milarm a few years ago and it's a great shooter.

surp. or new?

Well, what would be better, a new one from Marstars or a older one from S.I.R. though from what I heard today, the new ones were coming at the end of this month and are Not threaded barrels but pinned, and that sounds funky to me to have a non threaded barrel.

Both of my SKS's came from SIR, and both are military surplus threaded barrel models. The pinned barrel models are just as good, as long as they're milsurp and not parts-bin hodgepodge rifles. From what I've heard, there's only a couple batches of SKS's that were garbage, most of the SKS's you'll see these days are pretty good, including Marstar's.

Personally, I'd go for a milsurp SKS over a new-production Norinco SKS any day. Lever Arms is the cheapest place to get 'em but I'd get one from SIR anyway, reason being their customer service is REALLY good (in my experience, anyway) and if you're not happy with the rifle you can send it back and either get a refund, store credit or exchange it for another SKS that might be in better shape.

Thanks for the feedback, I did not realize I could send it back to S.I.R and get the full refund, thats why I was kinda leaning towards Marsatar because of the one yr. warranty. I think you may have made up my mind now. Thanks again. :D

No problem ;) Hope you get a good one!

My advice when dealing with SIR is to phone in your order, rather than place it online. They usually end up phoning you anyway even if you do place your order online, just to clarify details with you and confirm shipping costs, so you might as well save yourself (and them) some time and just call 'em :D They ship quickly and their pack-jobs are top notch. All the girls I've talked to (I'm convinced that their order dept is staffed entirely by women) are super nice & bubbly, and they do respond well to flattery ;) I've only ever had to return a product to them once, and when I did the fact that I was really nice about it made the transaction very smooth. Also, keep in mind that their "satisfaction guarantee" is only 30 days, so unwrap the rifle as soon as you get it and check it out, and if you don't like it don't even bother washing the cosmoline off, just get on the horn right away and send it back.

Good luck! Let us know how you make out!

If they really are Type 56s', they should have chrome lined bores. If you intend to buy corrosive (most milsurp) ammo to practice with, that's definitely the way to go. Call SIR and ask if the rifles have chrome lined bores. If they don't and you know how and are willing to spend the time to clean after shooting corrosive, then pick up one of the Yugo SKS rifles from Marstar or advertise for one on the Milsurp Exchange. If you're going to stick with handloads or off the shelf sporting ammunition, the Yugo or (pricey) Russian originals are the way to go. Marstar even sells a scope setup that won't change the value of the rifle as it replaces the part that the scope is mounted on. bearhunter

ALL chinese SKS's have chrome bores, gas piston heads and bolt/bolt carriers. Yugo 59/66's don't have chrome bores. Chances are, if you're buying an SKS for $159 it's gonna be a Chicom, which means chrome for you ;)

bearhunter... i was under the impression that whether the barrel is chromed lined or not, it should always be thoroughly cleaned to remove the corrosive elements.

That is 100% correct.

Yep. It's just that Chrome bores are easier to clean and more resistant to the corrosion, so they tend to lead to a longer life.

Still, if you can get a Yugo, GET IT! FAR better quality than Norcs, even though it takes a bit more dilligence to clean em.

I like the Yugo also, but Marstar has none for now, and when I spoke with the guy last Thursday, he mentioned receiving the new Norinko ones only this month, and no mention of any other kinds. As for a chromed bore, I don't think that matters to me so much for the fact I always clean the bore the same day I fire it with any of my guns. Also, I probably will be using it only for hunting, so it really will not see to many rounds so I will buy the ammo off the shelf at the local store(no corrosive). I don't have to much time to actully go shoot for fun, and when I do I prefere shooting something more accurate at 100yd. plus targets for accuracy.

I suggest you use it for more than hunting. These little rifles are a lot of fun to shoot. Find out about any Service Rifle matches shot in your area and go have some fun! The more you shoot, the better you get!

Also the gas tube ain't chromed. :D
But it does seem to have some strange finish to it...almost parkerized in some way.

Well I ordered it this morning from S.I.R, and your 100% right Bear, the woman there are either to nice to be true, or are happy drunks :D She did not know much about the gun, but was extreamly friendly to deal with, not something I see very often.

P.S I feel like an idiot ....just realized now you have to click the button to get to the next page of these threads :p Computer ignorance at its best
