Hi,

I'm beginning casting my own boolits with WW. To make harder boolits I need to put 2-3% of tin and 4-6% antimony. My question is where can I buy tin and antimony? I'm living in Québec and all places said they only sell to enterprises. Guys where do you find the precious metals?

Can I use tin welding wire?

Thanks,

"...tin welding wire..." Doubt it'd be pure tin. A welding supply shop should have tin. I believe most casters use solder with antimony in it.

BLEH;
Anything above 2% tin is a waste of expensive metal....

Get yourself some wheel weights, be carefull to remove the zinc alloy ones, add 2% tin and voila, a nice hard alloy....

Or if you have access to pure metals, 85% lead, 13%antimony, 2% tin....

AIM Projectiles parent company Alchemy Extrusions sell the various metals you may need if shipping or distance isn't an issue.

wheel weights have a lot of Antimony, all you need is to add 2%or 3% tin. I use lead free solder which comes in 1 lb rolls. it is about 99% tin.

I also use Lead free solder. Purchase in 5 lb rolls for about 65.00 Home depot. Not all the stores carry it anymore though. I think I remember that it is about 95% tin.

You can run straight wheel weights and 'water drop' your bullets. Have a look at the forum castboolits.gunloads.com Amazing bunch of guys and more collective knowlegde than you can use in a lifetime.

What are you casting for? Pistol or rifle? Water dropped WW bullets are plenty hard enough for most pistol shooting. I usually don't futz too much about tin content unless I'm looking to load some hot magnum rounds or a peppy rifle load.

You don't need to add tin or antimony to wheel weight lead.
Cast your bullets and drop them in a 5 gallon pail of water. I've been doing it for years and it works just fine.

Tin itself is a soft metal. So is lead. Combined, they do make an alloy that is harder than either of the two base metals, but there is a limit to how hard your alloy will get. There's already enough tin in lead. By adding antimony, you harden things up even more. Wheel weight lead is just fine for shooting pistol and rifle without adding anything to the mix.
