I was given a very rough Lee Enfield No. 1 SMLE (Mk. 3) with a slightly rusted chamber. I'd like to drill out and tap a .303 brass case, attatch a rod and use a power drill to lap out the very end of the chamber using some lapping compound on the brass case neck.

Only trouble, where does one buy this stuff?

Afterwards I will use a bit of steel wool and oil to polish out the barrel.
Thanks in advance!

"...use a power drill..." That'll likely make the chamber slightly out of round. However, any auto supply place will have the compound.

I bought some at parts source in London yesterday for a scope ring lapping job. Its cuts fairly quickly, so take great care with it if this is the route you are going to use to fix that chamber.

Try oooo steel wool first and as a last resort valve lapping compound. Just my 2 cents worth.

Try that first, clean it, shoot it, unless there is hard extraction, do nothing more.
If you do use a case and lapping compound, only use a case that was fired in the chamber. Its the only one that is an exact fit. And getting the fired case will determine if you have a problem.

Like it has been said, only use the lapping compound as your last resort and DO NOT use the Valve Grinding Compound that is sold in auto parts stores. It is far to aggressive, go to an industrial supply store like Acklands and get Clover Compound in a fine grit.

Facing difficult extraction .. and no other option has worked thus far. Had Wortners in Chatham work on it for a bit, and he suggested the lapping compound and fired case (which I have).

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunatly the compound is my only option. I will pick it up from Acklands on Monday!
