Where to find a double square bridge?

Hey guys,

I am on a quest for a double square bridge 98 action, the Brno 21H or ZG-47 comes to mind. I guess one may have an easier time just buying the whole rifle at a show and sell the parts you don't need but I am just curious what everyone else does in a situation like this?

Thanks in advance!

Just looking at options for my 9,3 that doesn't seem to be coming together quickly.
My Husky 146 is in great shape metal wise, but the bolt won't clear a scope, it is not D&T'd and the safety would have to be swapped out.
The reason for the square bridge is there is so much clearance to use the iron sights as compared to barely being able to see over the usual scope bases ie: Weaver(yuck) or the Leupold QR's. It is much cleaner looking and gives it that classic European flair too.

It's just a crazy thought that I could swap out the whole reciever, or yard the barrel off my 9,3 and put it on another worthy action.

I have a couple leads to follow already!:)

Another question, will a barrel for a large ring just spin onto a small ring or will it need mods too?

I understand the yen for a square bridge style Mauser - they are very nice looking.

But getting the 146 modified to a sporter level isn't that big a deal. I had the bolt handle on my Brazilian Mauser cut off and replaced by Corlanes in Dawson Crk for about $100.00. D&T was $20.00/hole and I know where you can get a 2-position, M70-style safety for $75.00.

The barrel shank on a large-ring is 1.1" as compared to .98" for the small ring.

So for $350 to $400 I can get my Husky modified as you have mentioned or if I can be really lucky I can do like SuperCub did with his Browning 300H&H and get a whole separate rifle for $425 and start from there. I know a Brno 21H isn't as easy to find but I insist on having a rifle that has useable irons if they are going to be on the barrel. I have yet to see a screw down base that gives you a good clear view of the irons, without having them jacked up sky high.

Plus I am after a rifle that I want to keep really long term for a change, when I sell myself short I know I will hate it and need to sell it down the road.

I appreciate you sharing the costs associated Mauser98, I will keep them in mind!

Thanks,
Noel

Okay, so I have procured a 21H action, and the rest of the rifle too!
I don't know if I can bring myself to tear it down, we will see when it come in.

Another question, regarding the large ring and small ring barrels. Will a large ring barrel spin onto a small ring action?
Sorry Mauser98, I am not all that familiar with the terminology. To me the shank is the part of the barrel that the reciever tightens against when threaded in. It would just be a matter of opening the barrel channel in the stock then by the .120", correct?

have you guys seen the double square bridge 98 actions that Lever Arms has ? M70 3-position safety and straddle hinged floorplates. They are Chinese made, and the dovetail does not match anything I can reference to, though it wouldn;t be a great trick to recut them to Brno 19mm. The big problem I see is re-sale down the road if you toss money into a rifle with a Chinese made action

No, the shank diameter is different:
Large ring = 1.100"
Small ring = 0.980"

Might be worth looking into, but no I've not heard of these ones. I wonder how close the tolerances would be to a F.N.

Kristian, in regards to the barrel shank, can a smithy just trun it down to fit a small ring? I really need to take a gunsmith course to learn some terminology.

I am pretty sure a Husky 146 is a large ring reciever, and a 21H reciever is small ring, hence the reason I keep asking. Just want to know if I can tuck the 21H reciever in place of the origonal F.N. action, that's all.

I can't find it on the website (no surprise) do you remember what the price is?

I think they were $600 or so. At the time I was ordering a Sunny Hill fp/tg for damn near that much, and I was figuring on buying one for the bottom metal and ebaying the rest, like the bolt, steel trigger and the three-pos safety.

The safeties don;t work well, and they are not something you can just take apart and hit with a stone. They also drilled/tapped the tops of the bridges, since they don;t have rings to match the dovetails.
