After hunting with some buddies in September and loving their sxs 20g smiths and ithicas I am in the market for one. I just came back from the Woodstock gun show and I didn't see much. There was a spanish 20g but some of the screws in the action where non-matching so I put it down. I have looked online at ellwood epps and gobels but no luck. I also see a few WTB ads on the EE. Can anyone shed some light on the current market for used sxs American or European 20g in the sub $5-600 range? Thanks

Are you looking for a vintage SxS or something more modern? At $500.00 you will be looking at guns such as the Stevens 311 or maybe Fox model B or Ithaca Flues, Western Arms Long Range etc. There are also Spanish makes that will put you in that price range for used. However, it is quite a bit harder finding a 20 gauge compared to a 12 gauge. Especially if you want one in the higher grade condition. Even tradeex, as mentioned above, have limited selection in 20 gauge. You can pretty much rule out any English 20 gauge doubles in your price range unless they are pretty much worn out.

I'm not looking for a high grade at all. The fox, Stevens etc. are what I want in 20g. I was wondering where to find one. Kinda surprised that there isn't more around.

You'll just have to keep watching the EE or Firearms Canada, gun addicts or Alberta Outdoorsmen. You never know when one will be listed. I have an excellent condition 311 in 20 gauge but I don't really want to part with it.

I have just purchased a LNIB cz partridge in 20ga.This is a SXS with double triggers and an english stock. It is nice looking and a nice shooter. It came wth 5 chokes and was in the price range your after.

IIRC, most used SKB/Ithacas currently hover abound the 700-1000 dollar range, for very good to excellent condition.
Myself, I was once in the market for an SKB Model 100/280 SxS in 20 also. Got sick of waiting for one, so I settled for a used Model 500 O/U at 750.
No regrets here.

I think he's looking for more of a vintage gun if I'm not mistaken. But yes, the selection increases a bit if looking for a little more modern. However, if he keeps watching a vintage gun will come along. As it is December, he has a little while to find one.

That was my idea to keep looking and wait it out until closer to september before I change what I'm willing to take. Is my price range out of wack for what I want?

I guess that solely depends on precisely what model you are looking for. If you talking about a previously owned and hunted American made Ithaca Flues for example you should be just fine. Unless someone tries to sell you a cherry collector and/or high grade variant.
Now if you are considering the 'newer' Ithaca/SKB series made in Japan in the 1980s or thereabouts (which is still lead shot only unless modified) then the answer is most probably no.

my opinion only............

Edit: I am ignorant of L.C. Smith pricing.

There ya go. Better grab if you want a 20 gauge. For less than that you will be looking at the Stevens 311's or Flues, etc. Don't think you will find a 20 gauge LC Smith for $500.00-$600.00 unless well used.

I'm very interested but I was taught years ago to be mindful of a member's rating. I don't know the seller and I don't want to imply anything whatsoever but a -1 rating is a bit troubling. Any advice. The speedy arrival of just what I want strengthens my patience for the right deal, but I do want that gun as well.

Yeah, that's a tough one. You could PM and ask for a phone number. Talk in person and see what sense you get. Possibly ask for references from other forum members he may know who have better ratings and will vouch for him.

Well perhaps besides talking to him, you could ask in private messages most things that will describe the gun as far as condition. Things such as any pitting in the bores, any dents, is the bluing good and original, is the action tight and on face, any repaired cracks, is the forearm tight, is the opening lever right of center and does the trigger selecter work as it should. You could also ask if the gun can be returned if it is not as he described or it doesn't function properly. Keep your private messages, do not delete tem. It may not guarantee you will get your money back, but if he says yes, it can be returned, then won't take it back if there is a problem, at least you can report him to the moderators. Chances are they would ban him since he already has a negative rating. If he says the gun is bought as is and he won't offer to take it back, then walk away. This may sound excessive but point out he doesn't have much of a rating. Of course you have to be reasonable as well.

Wish I was not 6 hours away or I would go look at it for you. I have had two dealings if I recall correctly on another site with this member and all went fine but we have never met.. That being said I would contact him as discussed by the other members and I know of at least two NS gunnutz members that if I recall correctly are living right in the same location or dam close. One may shoot at the same club as the seller and we have had quite a few dealings. He is very knowledgeable with respect to firearms and I trust his feedback 100% on firearm condition etc. Perhaps he will read this and chime in or send you a PM.The other individual I just know he lives in the same area. Good Luck

Hi ,its my gun. I can give you the reason for the -1 in a PM if you want. It was my one and only long distant gun deal and it turned me right off. But I bought this shotgun from the original owner,he told me he put maybe a whole box of shells through it since the mid seventies(Couldn't remember exactly what year he bought it,just that it was in Minnesota). I tried it once out at the club and the 100 rounds or so I put through it worked fine. The bores are mirror like.Im just not that into sub gauges.

If there's a member near they could meet me at Nova Sporting Clays Sunday morning,Ill bring it with me.

Things such as any pitting in the bores,No
any dents,No
is the bluing good and original,Its original and really quite good but not 100%
is the action tight and on face,Yes,very
any repaired cracks,No repairs anywhere I can see
is the forearm tight,Yes
is the opening lever right of center,JUst slightly, but since it has such a low round count I think it always was like this
and does the trigger selecter work as it should ,No trigger selector, its a single trigger, always fires the right barrel first

I appreciate all the advice. I think I should have contacted roblack first before mentioning it here. A bit of a mistake, I hope roblack isn't offended. I will PM him and discuss the gun. I believe that situations like his happen more often than we think and a neg rating doesn't accurately reflect everyone that has one. After all this I kinda feel like a tool thinking that a single trigger doesn't have as much appeal for me as what dreaming about. Am I out to lunch by thinking I can get a well-used classic double for my price range of <$600? Maybe I should rethink my budget. At $600 for roblacks gun plus shipping I am getting closer to $700 than the $500 I was originally thinking of.

No problem thud. Some prefer the single trigger, some dont. Ive got three SxS's,two with single triggers(This Fox and a Browning BSS)and another Fox 12ga with double triggers. Sometimes I make an error switching from one to the other, but after a few shots theres no difference.
