I'll be needing to pick up some hard cast bullets within the next few weeks. Just wondering who everyone uses. I've used Bens (who I think is now done making cast?) and bullet barn. Not to knock on bullet barn but whenever I push their 405g gc bullets fast I get some leading. Bens bullets were of course great. Just wondering who is everyone using for there hard cast bullets now?

I got leading from Bullet Barns 405 grain bullets when I used Unique as a propellant, then I started using a 405 grain bullets with a gas check, problem solved.

I am sorry to the poster as i have been very busy with some health issues and very busy with bullet orders, I am very low on "type metals" such as Linotype or Monotype, and until i find more, I won't be able to fill orders for "hard" or "very hard" bullets. The 420lfn gc and 480 wfn gc are the bullets in question.....Ben

Sorry Ben, I thought maybe you were taking some time off. I didn't know about the health and material problems. Good luck with both.

The Bullet Barn 405g with GC don't give me any leading until I go beyond 1600fps, somtimes I like to throw together a near max load with them and I'm scrubbing my barrel out for the next hour. Thanks all for the replies.

It's alright...you can still plug M.T. Chambers!!!...health is okay...they started to Laser a kidney stone in me and couldn't get at it so they left some tubes in me until they get at it again, but I'm runnin' to the can every half hour or so. I'm still out shooting most days, and testing bullets including some new ones, and am working on an order for the SAWWS folks for 20,000 bullets, all by hand of course...thanks for your concerns.....Ben

I never have had the pleasure of meeting this guy, except a couple of helpful PM's.

Do admire him though.

Hope he gets well...:)

I get my hardcast bullets from this guy, you can push them as fast as you want.http://www.competitor-pistol.com/jb bullets.html

Very high quality and not brittle or weak.

Another issue you may have with your leading is bore size, if your bullet is slightly undersize it could be a reason for leading. Of course, hardness and lube are other factors aswell.

Good luck

That reminds me... I need to make an order with him real soon... :)

Are you were the owner of MT Chambers then? Once you're back in action I'll have to order some bullets from you :D. I've been (and still am) a fan of the Bullet Barn for my hard lead bullets, but it'd be nice to have the option of a softer alloy for some of my rifles that prefer it.

I've heard that kidney stones can be quite painful. A friend of mine went through that a while back. Get better soon.

Chris.

How fast is fast?

I have heard of some pushing to +-1800 fps without a gas check without issue. Just curious.

PM Sent.

I have a load using IMR 4198 and a 405gr cast with that gives me 1825fps. With the bullet barn 405 with a gas check I do get some serious leading and don't bother to load them that hot anymore. I can't speak for everyone though, I guess a lot of guys like bullet barn.

With Bens bullets I haven't had any leading at any speeds.

With 13.0 grains of Unique, same bullet, I get 1,250fps and no leading.
