So I'm looking at those Turkish shorties hitting the market. I'd like to get one to have one but then I was thinking "where could I ever shoot this?". I'm guessing they're no good for skeet or trap, and you can't take them onto a rifle or pistol range, so...

Where to you guys go to fire your tactical or shorty shotguns?

My 12" barrelled 870 rides across the handle bars of an ATV when out checking livestock or fixing fence. Lots of black bear here these days, one particularly passive aggressive one who took a giant choke-cherry seed crap on the drive way.

18.5-20" barrels handle slugs just fine, I'd rather my 26-28" barrel.

Several studies have been done on this. If I recall, slug performance only gets bad at 12" and less.

Here is one such test:

Aside from the unexpected results in the 20-inch muzzle velocity testing, it is a safe assumption that for maximum performance at a minimal size for shooting slugs, a 12-inch barrel seems to be the optimum length. In the buckshot testing, it was the 18-inch stage that performed the best and had the smallest extreme spread.

All the Ottawa ranges I've been to allow you to shoot shotgun if desired. Bbl length is typically not controlled, provided it is legal.

James Yeager and the Remington police rep shot an MCS with different barrel lengths, one after another, and actually found that even buck shot accuracy is more complicated than expected - the 14 inch tube out performed the 18 inch tube. With any shotgun it's important to know how your individual setup works with your individual ammo. Great big targets on open land are the quickest and most effective way to test this - crown land is your friend, if there's any near you. Some ranges have a patterning area, for skeet shooters - they might not like your gun, but then they aren't being forced to shoot it are they?

Vancouver gun club has a min barrel length of 20". Written or unwritten it's sometimes enforced.

I like Pwa, I can shoot anything at anytime. Shot trap with a coach fun and it's tonnes of fun. Hopefully you can find a range like that in your area.

I shot 21/25 with my Grizzly 12.5 inch at skeet. Now your club might not allow the gun because its loud!!!!!! Actually its my best score ever at skeet. Mostly I take my shotguns to the range and set up steel targets and knock them down as fast as I can... Rinse repeat :) PS I can shoot in my backyard but rarely do... ONce and a while to test a load or the 22 begs for a mag to be shot.

No. Which is precisely why I refuse to live in "major metropolitan city". Or even within a small town limits
