This mornings Times Colonist (June 8) has an article 'Park officials howling over wolf activety' warning people that the wolves in Long Beach Pacific Rim park are becoming more aggressive and approaching people.

Wolves, like any large preditor aren't warm fuzzies, they are opportunistic efficient killing machines and no,they don't eat tofu.Hunters know that and respect them, the yuppie tourist types who read 'Never Cry Wolf' by Farley Mowat might be in for a rude surprise one day if the wolves become more acclimatized and lose their fear of humans

My own opinion is the moment a preditor fails to recognise a human as a threat to be avoided, and begins to see them a food source we have a problem.Hunting reinforces the relationship that humans are to be avoided and then everything is a lot safer for both the preditor and the humans.

I'm not advocating killing all wolves ,just maintaining a respectful relationship by not treating them like some cute little lap dog. They aren't .

He's dead.... Died in 2014. But I get your point. Wolves are highly intelligent, organized and brutally efficient. That doesn't make them evil its just what they are. Mother nature is a beotch, respect her or she'll be completely remorseless as she sends you to the next plain of existence.

The core problem is a disconnect between modern society and the natural world.

Many people live out their lives with no concept of what the natural world is about, beyond what they see in a zoo or hear about in a Disney movie. Their view is warped and uneducated, and the 'circle of life' to them is no more than a cool phrase from The Lion King.

Yes, wolves are predators. Predators kill other animals to survive. The killing isn't pretty. Its about as horrible as any horror movie director might possibly imagine. But its entirely natural, normal, intrinsic. Don't try and apply Disney in the wild, and avoid silliness like anthropomorphism. Give wolves their space, let them do what they do, control them where necessary, and understand that their place in the natural world is important and something to be treasured. That doesn't mean that they want a pat on the head or a treat.

Farley Mowat is dead, btw. Circle of life and all that.

I don't know to menny hunter who have gotten a wolf
Only a small handful of trapper are able to trap wolfs ther not easy to hunt or trap
Nothing wrong with daydreaming for most hunters getting a wolf he is just a dreaming
Hutting wofls on the BC coast is not like hunting wolfs in Albert
If you are going on wofl hunt on the coast the best way is to find a beach whale and hunt from a boat
We always see them hanging around ripe whale roting on the beach

Probably most wolves that are shot by hunters were incidental kills, not specifically targeted, simply because unhabituated wolves tend to avoid human contact-as they should. The problem in the pacific rim park is the wolves AREN'T avoiding humans.

The problem we have as hunters IS this 'disconnect' with nature and that is no better seen than the 'anti hunter' sentiment. But like it or not, those people with their untaught ,irrational city bred attitudes are also VOTERS ,and voters influence policy.

Case in point-the way the spring bear hunt was shut down in Ontario by anti hunters who swayed politicians, albeit by using vehicle orphaned cubs saying 'hunters killed their mothers' banning the spring hunt , the result being problem bears.Right now in BC we will lose the grizzly hunt, despite the fact that grizzly population is healthy and can sustain a controlled hunt, but it's not 'politically correct'and sentiment will overrule facts everytime given enough money spent on PR

Yep, the pendulum swings farter and farther to the left until some one is mauled or most likely killed by the human desensitized wolves. Even then there will be the cries that they were just doing what comes naturally to them and the victim must have done something wrong. However we all on this forum know what the correct course of action needs to be, but unfortunately a few greenies may need to be eaten to enlighten the other side...........No different than the girl killed by coyotes on the east coast a couple years back, the very first recorded irrefutable case, but there will be more until the pendulum starts to swing back towards rational thought processes and these predators are fully taught to fear man again.
Not unlike the gorilla fiasco over the past couple weeks, it is unfathomable for me that some people think that an animal has the same rights and right to life as a human being. Like I said unfathomable warped thinking.........those who think this should be on the front lines in the parks with aggressive coyotes, wolves and grizzlies. Wonder how long their ideals would last, if it were their life and rights being snuffed out as the wolves tore them limb from limb. Would they be screaming out "Don't shoot, don't shoot, they're only doing what comes naturally, it's my fault".........somehow I don't believe this would be their last words......I personally think Walt Disney was an evil SOB and his warm and fuzzy wildlife movies have influenced more people to be injured and/or killed by wildlife than any other modern media.

A few years back,a cougar killed a hiker in California ,and the cougar was then tracked down and killed as well. The woman left two kids, and the cougar also had kits...Trust funds were set up for the woman's two children, and someone set up a trust fund for the orphaned cougar kits.....guess what?- the trust fund for the orphaned cougar kits was TEN TIMES as much as the woman's orphaned kids......go figure...it's a world gone mad

Hunters theoretically are more educated about the ecosystem simply because we are first hand observers, not armchair environmentalists, and no outdoorsman I know advocates 'killing them all',if for no other reason than it upsets the natural prey/preditor balance that keeps the herd healthy.

You can see what happens when natural preditors ( including hunters) are removed from an ecosystem, on some of the gulf islands with no hunting, no Cougars and wolves, the deer have basically eaten themselves out of forage and are starving

I know there is new work legaslashion comming out that all work in northern BC will require a wildlife moniter
If company's don't proved a trained wildlife moniters thy will be liable
A bit off topic just thinking of the post about the couger attack

I saw an article in a local paper about wolves in Banff interacting with people aggressively, and it struck me as strange that someone would go strolling through the woods in an area where such interactions can reasonably be expected without at least bringing along a can of bear spray. Then, if Mr. Wolf does anything that indicates that he has lost his healthy fear of you or a family member you hose him down.

That, and of course the basic common sense of not feeding them (actively or passively).

A pack that has learned to see humans as a source-of-choking-blinding-pain-at-a-distance will not cause problems. One that has learned to see humans as a source-of-easy-to-get-food will.

But as I type that I realize that I'm making some tall assumptions about how such knowledge is passed down or transmitted in the pack. Am I overestimating the intelligence of these animals? Can anyone with a solid understanding of the subject tell me if this logic makes any sense?

Farley Mowat? If I had a dollar for every time I heard my grandfather call him a stupid s.o.b while I was a kid I'd be rich!! Lol

People in the North referred to him as Hardly Knows it. :)

Park wardens in Banff just snuffed one that had become to conditioned to humans for their likeing, evidently chased people into their vehicles and even made off with a loaf of bread.

Someone once said where they burn books, they will soon burn people. Where there is more concern over the treatment of animals than over human beings one can draw the obvious conclusions.
