I have a notion that I might like a 1911 in .22

What is my best bet for quality, reliability, accuracy, in something modern made with available mags that don't cost $50+ each?

I'm not interested in pot metal guns.

No GSG

No Browning 1911-22

No guns with just a 1911 grip, such as the Mk-Iii Ruger.

From where I'm sitting it looks like options are pretty much the Walther "Colt" or something like a Kimber conversion.

In all honesty, I'd put the Browning 1911-22 up against any other 1911-22 without hesitation. Mine has been ultra-reliable and as accurate as you can expect a pistol of this type to be.

when i was in the market it came down to 2 ways to go.
either cheap and easy or expensive.

cheap and easy was a GSG/SIG 1911-22

expensive was the Kimber conversion.

i went with the cheap GSG.
its been a couple years now and im totally happy with my GSG but ill eventually pick up a Kimber conversion just because...... well just because i like to spend money i guess.

out of curiosity why did you take the new Browning 1911-22 off your list?
while i havnt shot one i have handled a few and i thought they where very nice, but they felt like a small toy in my hands.
those who have them seem to love them though.

I would have bought a Browning a long time ago if it wasn't 3/4 sized. The Kimber Rimfire Target is about the only other one out there.

the nighthawk and sti are the best. the whole slide doesn't reciprocate so there is less moving mass which is better for .22.

Just be aware that the "Colt" 1911-a1 needs high velocity rounds.
The cheap ammo won't cycle the action reliably.
I've got it. Like it. But the need for ammo that's more expensive then 9mm has relegated it to a safe queen for me.

I have one of those and I like it but it seems to be finicky. One mag will shoot all 10 rounds and the next mag will have an empty casing hang up on almost all shots.
btw...type of ammo doesn't seem to be a factor..*shrugs*

I have avoided the GSG 1911 22's precisely because of accounts like this. I like my guns to work properly right out of the box, not after a bunch of frigging around.

The GSG looks to have pretty gimmicky innards, buffers, whatnot, and I was not terribly smitten with one that I shot.

The Browning I have shot, and I liked it, stiff trigger aside, but it's about $200 more than it's worth, IMO.

I disagree. It's about $200-$300 more than the GSG, and it eats anything. I put almost 1500 rounds through mine without cleaning before a stoppage occurred. I do understand that the smaller size does put some people off, but that aside it is one of the best .22's based off a center-fire pistol available, IMO.

I *like* my GSG but the only ammo I've found so far that is 100% reliable to cycle it is the Remington Yellow Jacket. I've polished the slide and rails on the frame and it will shoot other stuff better now, but I think a bit more polishing will help it some more.

A bit too much plastic stuff on it for me, but it is pretty accurate and fun to shoot. Mostly I have inexperienced guests shooting it, so they really don't care about the plastic. :)

That's right, but then...when you drop a $100 ZRTS kit into the GSG, she eats anything, too.

I've owned a kimber target for about 6yrs and have around 7,000rounds down the pipe. It likes only high velocity ammo 1250fps or more I find the cheaper stuff gives it issues but overall I'm happy with it. The main problem with the Kimber is the price when I bought mine there was no GSG's 1911. I would probably buy one of them and save myself a few hundred but if you can find used Kimber on the EE they are real nice.
