Which 1911 to buy?

I'm sure this will stir p one helluva hornets nest, but I am wanting to get a 1911 in the near future and I want honest opinions, based on first hand experience as to what to get. I am looking to send somewhere in the "as cheap as possible to the $1300 range". I have shot kmbers at the range and liked them, (though my faves are closer to the $2000 range), wasn't impressed with the STI (though they were looking quite over use and abused by the time I ever shot one)...shot a few Norinco's that seemed to function well just lacked some of the ###y refinement of some of the others...

As far as any specifics that are important, I want 3 dot sights whether night sights or not, very aggressive serrations on the front of the grip and ambi hammerlock/safety would be preferred, though not mandatory...

Read alot of good things about Taurus, but believe more in word of mouth and don't know anyone who owns one.

Also a huge fan of SIG SA/DA's and wondered how their 1911's compared to others in the price range?

Thanx in advance for your help

I used to have a Kimber Stainless TLEII. It was a great pistol...ran about 2500+ rounds through it without any hiccups. In that $1100-$1400 range they offer quite a few options. I know a few other guys that own Kimbers and they all seem to be happy with them. That being said, this isn't an endorsement for Kimber....just my experience with them. I'm sure there are a ton of other options for you to consider.

Everything you want other than the front strap checkering is in the new Ruger 1911. It should be in Canadian hands by the end of this week according to the place I pre-ordered from.
Can't go wrong with SIG or Kimber, though.

I am very happy with my S&W 1911. You should be able to find a nice one new or used within that price range.

good luck lol.

so many quality makers these days, its all on you and your personal tastes. norc, great budget 1911, best imo for dollars spent. kimbers, nighthawkes and dozens that fall in between. you will know it when you find it, have fun.

and always remember. opinion's are like buttholes, everyone has one.

Kimber and Springfield have nicely finished traditional 1911's in that range. SIG has their own take on the 1911, an it's pretty sweet. STI makes nice guns but the rollmarks on the slide are so hideous they really turn me off. S&W should be found in that range as well. Dunno what Colts are going for. Remington R1 Enhanced is cheaper than that, so is the Ruger SR1911. I wouldn't look at Norinco with that kind of budget. Maybe check out having something made by Dlask, his guns start around $1300 IIRC.

Colt, Kimber, Ruger, Sig, S&W etc etc. There's so many out there and everyone has their own personal favorite brand. Pick the one that you like.

While i wanted the ruger Sr1911 , im going to have to wait but in the meantime i got a good deal on a Norinco that i just couldnt pass up .. and actually im quite peeved at myself for not getting one sooner , i always just glanced at them as bottom of the barrel but holding one and taking it apart , i have changed my mind .. New mags and change the sights and your set .

Just make sure when you take it apart that you dont let the recoil spring hit you in the face.. like i did , it hurts.

Picked up a Stainless II and couldn't be more happy with it. the fit and finish are amazing and everything is super tight. The Sigs are also VERY well build and look great.

Between the quality of the gun and the second to none service you get in Canada from the distributor, STI is pretty hard to beat. The Trojan is one of the best 1911's for the money.

There are tons of right answers and very few wrong ones these days when it comes to quality 1911's. Even norcs are fine for the money, especially if you want to practice upgrading, stripping etc, but even out of the box they are reliable. Maybe avoid para's. Springfield Milspec is the best buy dollar for dollar in my opinion, but that is just my opinion. My favorite gun to shoot is actually my Norc that I have done a bunch of work too.

Buy a COLT

This New COLT model 70 is available at Arm's East (above) for $1185.
Why buy a COPY, when you can own a COLT!

The big advantage to buying Colt is that you are getting quality small parts.

Colt's standard for safeties and sears and so on is much better than Kimber, say, or Remington, or Springfield, for that matter.

They are often fit a little loose, but I would take a loosely fit, plain-jane Colt over a tight Kimber with bells and whistles. It's a higher grade of pistol.
