I have been into precision shooting and reloading for about a year. I am currently looking for a 223 with a fast twist 26" barrel for paper punching and varmint hunting up to 600 yds. As the title says I am considering either a savage 12FV or a custom remington. I want a rifle that will shoot 1/2 MOA consistently which is about the best of my abilities at the moment.
I am considering Savage 12FV for the following reasons:
People that own them seem to be very pleased with the accuracy. (1/2 - 3/4 MOA out of the box with handloads from what I have read)
It has a 1-9 twist rate, which is why i am not interested in a stock remington.
The price is quite reasonable.
The main drawback is that pepple seem to dislike the stock and the 10FP-LE 223 is not available with the McMillan stock.
Is the 12FV the same as 10FP-LE as far as accuracy?
I guess these are my options:
Buy a savage, upgrade and bed the stock and once I shoot out the barrel, get some work done on it and re barrel it to a 1-8 twist.
Spend the $$$, get a custom remington built using a 1-8 twist barrel (that can hopefully consistently shoot 1/4 - 1/2 MOA) .
Am I better off to save some $$$ and spending them on shooting or take these $$$ and buy the best rifle I can afford.
Which would you choose, are there any other options I should consider?
Thanks,
