Which .308 Cartridge for Calf Moose?

any and all will take moose its all about shot placement .30-30 and .303 have taken quite a few and myself I would not even hesitate to use a 7.62x39 but im patient and don't push the limits I put on myself use what you are comfortable shooting and know the target you are shooting at

Any well constructed 165 - 180 grain bullet will do well... The main thing is to make sure that your gun is well sighted and you place the bullet properly.

Calf moose aren't any bigger in terms of body weight than an average size adult deer. I'd use whatever deer load you have it sighted for. You'll have a hard time selling a plea of self defense if you have to shoot a cow, I would think.

Why do people feel the need for some magical bullet/cartridge?

Any decent factory hunting ammo in the suitable calibre will do the job.

You are much better served with 5 boxes of the cheaper stuff, and a ton of range time, over one expensive box of magical instant kill cartridges.

leave the calves....its the only way to get big moose and more of them..

Calves are the only thing you're allowed to shoot in Ontario if you weren't drawn for adult tags. You have to buy a licence to put in for the draw, and since a licence is almost $50, you should be able to get some use out of it.

With this:
I have shot MANY moose with 180 gr. Sierra Game Kings. Many of them were one shot kills. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. Jim

The answer might be boring but its true. We shoot two kinds of ammunition: cheap factory stuff that each particular gun likes and custom loads we work up for each gun. Both kill. One is more fun. ;)

Actually, truth be told, you are better off taking a calf as 65 % of them won't make it through the winter anyway. And the ones that do won't reproduce until they are 3 years old.

Most moose are not tough, elk around here seem to have a lot more will to live. Any load that will shoot well for you will do just great. I would stick with a 150 or 165 grain in a 308 as the trajectory will be slightly flatter than the 180's

Best wishes on your hunt!

Calf moose in the forest has a 50/50 chance of making it though to the next year. Also half of them are bulls. Better off taking calf than mama. Mama will live and have another calf next year. That's my opinion and the opinion of many others.

Hi Niggles
as you can see in my thread in this section ( .308 good enough for moose?) .308 is plenty.
I use 168 gr TSX bullets and have no fear of taking the biggest bulls. As others have said, shot placement is the key to everything.
I would not hesitate to use even a 7mm-08 on moose.
Keep the range reasonable and use good bullets.
