Which .375 H&H rifle ???

I have narrowed my search for a .375 H&H calibre to two rifles. One is the Ruger Magnum and the other is the Mauser M03 standard. I would appreciate any opinions on my choices (keeping in mind the Mauser is 1200 dollars more). Thanks

I have a Ruger Safari Magnum in .375H&H, and I like it. It has been to Africa with me and has accounted for 8 animals (7 species of game). It is reliable and consistently accurate for hunting purposes (1.25 MOA every time, every place, every day) with Remington premium ammo loaded with 300 gr Swift A-Frames.

My only complaint is that it is fairly heavy. With scope it weighs in at 10 lbs. On the other hand the extra weight helps moderate recoil in what otherwise is a fairly stout cartridge.

I have no experience with the M03, although I understand that it is well built and a very good rifle. It does not however have controlled round feed, which you may want if you are looking for a dangerous game gun, although you did not say that this is your reason for buying a .375. The M03 is modular and you can get interchangeable barrels. But as you said it is also much more expensive than the Ruger (even a the propriatary scope mount will cost you over $500).

The Ruger seems to be a solid gun. The mauser type magnum action has controlled round feed, and the quarter rib sights are a classic styling touch. I looked at one when I was buying a .375H&H but I went with a Winchester model 70 instead. My impression was that the Ruger is a solid choice, plus the $1200 you save will pay for a quality scope.

Have you handled both of the guns that you are interested in? If possible that should be the first step in making a decision.

Looks good. Nice and clean looking:). I like.

Of the two, I'd go with the Ruger as well. A .375 H&H in a push feed just doesn't seem right to me.

Other choices I would consider would be the Winchester M70 and CZ 550. I have a CZ 550 in .375 H&H and really like it. True magnum length action, CRF, full 5 rounds in the mag, accurate, and nicely made.

I'm with Wooly, used the same .375 H&H Ruger RSM to great effect here and abroad. The RSM will never let you down, comes unbelievably well equipped for its price (the integral quarter rib is an option worth about as much as my entire RSM cost me with my favourite maker), and it is as Wooly mentioned, heavy. I don't mind a 10lb rifle one bit, and have packed it probably hundreds of kilometres by now, but ask me in twenty years I suppose. Still don't think it'll matter. It took all the following except one and quite a few more not pictured, a picture string that's likely tired on this site though it grows annually, with the exception of the Woods Bison at the end, it played backup rifle for him and didn't need to fire. As mentioned the M03 is a push feed, and the RSM a true controlled round feed. The one thing I'd appreciate about the M03 is the takedown and multi-barrel capabilities, but I wouldn't own a .375 push feed.

Another vote for the Ruger RSM in .375 H&H. It is truly the "do it all" cartridge.

The Ruger RSM is a very capable rifle and, IMHO, its weight helps make the .375 H&H easy to shoot well.

If I was buying a blued/walnut 375Magnum these days, I'd very much consider a 375 Ruger [or 9.3x62] in African configuration.
