Which ACOG?

I am going to put an Acog on my G36. I am new to Acogs. I can't decide if I should be getting the TA11 or TA31. They are similar price but the TA11 is 3.5 whereas the TA31 is 4x. Is one better than the other?

There is a very small difference in optical change going from 3.4 to 4 - even comparing them side by side. I'd be more inclined to make the decision based on the reticle you want.

Go for the TA31F if you can get one. It has the fiber optic light tube along the top of the ACOG that lets way more light in and makes your reticle much brighter. I wouldn't buy an ACOG without it.

X2 what beltfed said.

I have been on the hunt for an ACOG as well, and your best bet is to choose which reticle you want, then decide on the model after that.

There are certain reticles that you can only get in the TA11 model because the TA31 version is restricted to MIL LE use.

First of all, you need to figure out how you are mounting the ACOG - are you using the long rail sold by HK or the tiny KAC rail?

This is important because the factory hensoldt POS 4X optic has very short eye relief. If you pay attention to the relationship between the mounting point and the eye piece in the ACOG, you will figure out why you need to give it a thought about the proper rail choice to ensure proper eye relief.

TA31 series has a 1.6" eye relief, TA11 series is up to 2.5" IIRC - but TA11 is longer as well.

I have seen a fellow mounting an ACOG on a high rail on a SL-8. You won't get cheek wield - you get chin wield instead. I am not sure how you actually employ your toy - OK for sitting on the bench - suck donkey's ball if you have to get onto prone. You will have to some how source the cheek piece for the G36 stock or find the newest generation of stock that is going to be the upgrade for the new german army.

The shorty KAC rail is probably the best for stuff like that, but the G36 stock can have the cheek riser piece added to it.

My personal favorite is my TA31RCO-M4CP (but never tried it with a G36)

Red or maybe Green but I wouldnt get the Amber, I have an Amber trijicon and its a hard colour to see against some backdrops. Maybe its ok in some uses? But its hard to pick out alot of times.

Have you gone to AR15.com? In thier optics forum they have pictures of almost all Acog reticles, in varying colours and against different back grounds.

The new Green looks nice

They eye relief on the TA-11s are significantly longer ( longer than the 2.4" that Trijicon spec would indicate). That inch of difference will be important to you on a G-36

My SL8 conversion uses the HDPS stock block and G36C stock so my LOP is about 1/2 to 3/4" longer than a G36 K / E stock. A TA31 mounted as far back as possible on KAC rail is unusable. A TA-11 is usable but you are crawling the stock

I think you need to pull out the tape measure and get behind the rifle

Both ACOGS are much better on a AR platform

The stock HK rail is usable with ACOG but the KAC ( or the knockoff from HPparts ) is better since its lower

H and J of reciticles NOT available with TA-11s as well so you are hooped either way for all the cool recticles. Here is a list on what State Dept will issue export permits for

3x sights All TA33 models available

3.5x All TA11 except for any H or J variants.

4x TA01, TA01B, TA01LAW TA31 TA31A TA31 DOC TA31DOCW TA31TRD, TA31TRDW TA31RMR.

To give you and idea on the TA-11 on a HK . The scope was throw on just for a pic. Normaly have it a few slots further back

Me personaly.
I wouldn't get an ACOG. I would be looking for an accu-point with some supper low rings.
Even some 1 like me with a really big mellon would have a hard time shooting this type of set-up in any position.

I've been using a TA31F since 2006 (on an AR15) and I love it. Only shot it at 100m (my homeclub max range). I love the chevron, real easy to aim, very sturdy, "short" eye relief though, works well with a tele-stock. I don't regret having spent big bucks at the time to get it. The only improvement I made was to mount it on a Larue... mount.

:agree:
I have the same type of set-up but the question was what type to put on an SL8.

I know (very very very sadly I don't own a G36K, so can't comment on that) but I thought maybe the OP can still benefit from my experience with the TA31F.

Neither. Wait for the Hensodlt ZO 4x30 -designed for the G36. Better FOV than ACOG.

I'm told it should be out for Christmas.

I used to use the TR33-8 3X 30 mm ACOG.

I found FOV to be quite constricted so I switched to the TR24G 1-4 green triangle accupoint. If you want an ACOG, the TA-11 while quite big does offer good compromise of longer eye relief and wider FOV.

I choose the TA11F with the red chevron 223 reticule. I bought it to use it on a C7 in Afghanistan in next Febuary. I did train with it this summer (on a 10.5" Colt AR-15) in semi or full auto. That was cool!

The eye relief is amazing. Important for me as I may have to shoot while moving or running.

My 2 cents.
