I'm planning on building a custom 30-06 hunting rifle, lightweight, 22" match barrel, nice wood stock, something that will shoot well, not necasarily benchrest accurate, (but close would be nice!), but something i can be proud of. My question is what action to start with, do i need to use an older, quality action to get that silky smooth feel, or do any of the new actions available have this quality? I've read that hoya actions from japan are quality pieces, anyone have any experience with these? how about the new mauser 98's available? If my lotto ticket works out, i suppose i'd find a pre 64 model 70, but odds are stacked agin me! any suggestions much appreciated!

Buy a Tikka T3, have the barrel cut and recrowned. problem solved.
And because you had the barrel cut it will be custom.

thanks, where would i look for just the action from a m70, or husquvarna, or do i have to buy a complete rifle? what kind of dollars ?

You might find a action only but more willing to bed that your going to have to purchase a complete rifle and start from there.

You can certainly buy the complete rifle and part it out. You will have an easier time selling model 70 parts than some of the other older guns.
I have 4 custom rifles that I have bought or built and still own, and another I sold to my brother. They are all stainless, fiberglass stocked, hunting rifles with custom barrels.
But If I was wanting a really nice custom rifle with a fine piece of walnut on it I would buy a Cooper from Clay. No question.

If hunting is your thing consider a mauser style action . The 700 push feed actions are great for benching, most gunsmiths can make it accurate and good for hunting. But in that case were you need to take a quick follow because your game decides your first shot wasn't good enough and wants payback via a charge and some teeth....you want a control feed action to make sure it chambers so you can put em down. Just my .02 of humour. Just buy a mauser 98. Fork out the dough and it is good to go.

are the new mauser actions available as well built as the old originals? the feel of a classic bolt action is important to me, my custom just wont do it for me unless i can get that silky smoothness that the older actions seem to have

If want a Husqvarna, Tradex has used commercial 1640 rifles available, already chambered in 30-06, for less than $500.

I purchased a barrelled action from them in 6.5x55 for a custom build. It will be reblued (rust blue by myself) and stocked with a very nice piece of wood. If you want a nice trigger, then huberconcepts.com/Husqvarna.htm is one place to start.

Timney does not have a trigger for it with the correct safety for existing stocks, however their standard safety will fit, and if you are restocking, then you can make a new cutout for the Timney trigger

First choice is a Pre 64 M70 second is a FN Mauser 98 and then the new M70 Classic action in that order, those are my choices.
Wood and rust blued metal....just beautiful!

Pick one you like.

Any action I have ever worked with is capable of more accuracy that any hunting rifle or (perhaps more important) hunter can hold.

In the end you will find the premium bullets are holding you back from much below MOA performance (repeatable on demand).
Therein lie the problem and unless you are willing to settle for something like Berger bullet performance everything you spent your hard earned money on is lost.

Remington BTW! ;)
