I have a Remington 700 SA in 243 in a H.S. Precision varmint/tactical stock. Any suggestions as to which aftermarket metal and mag is best with the least amount of fitting.

i believe wyatts and hs bottom metals are the ones that require the least amount of fitting but also if im not mistaken take their own type of mags, as far as best and most available ive heard the bottom metals that take AI mags are where its at

You have a powerful selection for a 700. Here are some:

H&S -- They work. The mags aren't as good as AI, but it will fit in your factory stock.

V-Bull,ATRS AICS mag systems -- work really well. Require some fitting to your stock, and maybe rifle. This can be done with hand tools though.

ATRS AW mag system. Same as above, but use shorter AI AW double stack mags. I would do this in a heartbeat if I were doing it over again.

ATRS also had some side release mag systems last time I was in, though I don't remember the details.

There are piles of others, but I think they are either junk, or foreign versions of the ATRS, and V-bull offerings.

Dumb question - what does ATRS stand for?

Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply. They are a supporting dealer of the website, here is their page

As far as mags go, the AI's seem to be regarded as the best in the industry. For bottom metal, there is a bunch of different models on the market. I would try and get a bottom metal that uses AI mags, rather than some proprietary mag IMO. Surgeon dbm's are suppose to be really good, and take AI mags.

ATRS is supposed to be bringing in Accurate magazines. These are a clone of the AI mag, but have the front plate removed. This allows you to load to 2.960" COAL. I have two of them and they are just as reliable as the AI ones. However, your feed ramp need to be opened up a bit or the tips of the rounds will catch underneath it.

AW mags require extensive machining to the M700 receive in order for them to feed properly. If you want to go that route, you're best starting with a custom action that was designed to feed from them.

I will have PTG bottom metal and they come at a great price. PTG stuff is usually excellent.

CDI, Badger, HS, Wyatt and others are now possible.

In general, the goto mag is the AI. proprietory mags don't seem to have a rep for equal performance but I have to assume they work ok?

I hope the PTG will come needing little to no inletting???? Most makes will vs the BDL inletting.

wyatt is supposed to be drop in but reports vary and their mags are not the most highly regarded.

I've had PTG metal for a while now. PTG uses a badger M-5 inlet on some of the metal they are making which needs the mag well opened up as well as the tang/action screw area. Some other metal out there is rebranded PTG...

Any metal using AI mags needs the mag well opened from bdl AFAIK

Wyatt mags are excellent quality and the metal is drop in. I've actually used them.

Check out the torture test:

The AI compatible metal requiring the least amount of inletting is stillers. I am bringing in a bunch of stiller metal.

From Stillers Site:

"NO SPECIAL INLET is required on the tang ends like our competition has. This will fit into a standard BDL bottom inlet in most stocks with their pillars if they use them (must meet remington specified depths). The only cutting needed is around the magazine box. We have also added material in this area such that a high precision cut is not needed. The overhang covers up small imperfections in the cut area."

The short action DBM is currently available with the long action coming soon"

I have the Wyatt metal with a 5 round and a 10 round mag. Quality is very good on both the metal and the mags, and no inletting was needed for installation into my Remington factory take off HS Precision stock.

I have this metal in stock now. The no inletting feature is definately a plus and huge time/cost saver. Here it is on crashmans rifle:

I can offer the MDT chassis in either SA or LA - these work with factory Rem actions and use AI mags.

Instock even :) Send me a PM or email and I can get you set up.

You will need AR buttstock, buffer tube and grip to complete.

Unsure if any of the other 3 US makes are set up for legal export yet.
