I just use 115gr ammo. IPSC poppers and steel targets are set up for it as far as I am aware and they are probably the most common 9mm round in any store. Personally the difference in recoil between 124gr and 115gr is so marginal, I do not notice it. Saying that I am also just someone who shoots IPSC to improve my proficiency and to have fun instead of being a serious competitor.
I'm using 125gr cast bullets because it's the mould I have, and 124gr campro because that was the boxes my guy had in the truck when I had the cash. I'd go to 115 with no worries. I don't think the ammo is the cause of my poor performance.
124gr as bullets are a little longer to have better contact with barrel and get stabilized better. They are cheaper than 147gr and with powder I use (Clays) recoil is same as 147. Shadow's barrel and sights are optimized for 124gr bullet too.
For better results, I recommend you try some 124gr FMJ (4.1gr Titegroup) or 147gr FMJ (3.3gr Titegroup)
but I found the lighter bullet the better, depending on your gun also. Whereas I have a open gun with a lightened slide for just Steel Challenge matches in the past.
for IPSC I used a 124 grn bullet, used to use a 115 grn with 8.8 grains 4756
Whatever is cheaper/available at the time which is usually 115 grain. I can't tell the difference between 115 and 124 grain factory loads regardless. I haven't tried 147 gr but I will get around to it someday.
Try some 147gr ammo. It feels noticeably softer. I've also noticed during our club practices that 147gr seems to knock the steel around on the duelling tree with much more authority, so probably a little more foregoing on hits to the edges.
The big difference will be when you switch from 115gr factory ammo to 147gr reloads you have tuned to your handgun. I load 147gr Campro with 3.5gr N320 which gets me to 132pf. One of our ladies at the last practice tried a couple of mags worth and found them much softer than the 115gr factory ammo she was using.
I've also heard that the really top shooters like 124gr projectiles because they can run a stronger recoil spring and feel their guns cycle quicker. I'm no where near that level yet, so I'll stick with 147gr because it gives me less muzzle flip. Most off those advanced shooters have forearms and grips like a gorilla, so a little more kick ain't gonna bother them lol
