Hey guys. Did some "light searching" but couldn't find anything. Which AR parts can I import from, say, Brownells? I'm planning on building an AR (my first), and my wife wants to get me some parts for Christmas (sweetheart that she is). Is it any part under $500, could I order an upper receiver from them? A lower? (obviously realize the restricted status of a lower) Again, I'm sure this has been posted before, please excuse my ignorance.

Import into Canada is not the issue. Export from the US is. Brownells will sell you anything they are able to. Receivers, barrels, bolts, along with some other items require specific export permits. There is also a fee for obtaining the export permit.

Gotcha. Looked up Brownells export list, looks like a $250 fee for the export license. That pretty much kills that idea right there. Anybody know if Irunguns charges a similar for bringing something in from their U.S. site?

I've had my wife oder me parts for AR builds the last couple years. I've been directing her to wolverine supplies, Questar, and Saskatoon gun works. You can find anything you need from any of those sites, plus many others. Is there something special from Brownells you were looking for?

while a bit over priced cowboy tactical seems to have the greatest number and consistency of in stock items.... they also have the higher priced name brand stuff instock all the time to.

Purchase parts independently and ship multiple times or conduct a live chat on their site to get educated on what can be accomplished.

I tried to order some stuff for my Colt a few weeks ago, just so happens they also fit the M16A1 and i was told by Numrich they could not export as it was considered "assault weapons" parts.
What were the parts? Ejection door and spring/catch, also would not export a 3 prong flashider.
I have ordered other AR15 parts with no prbs from Brownells but they were newer production.

No, nothing in particular, it just seems as though they have a bigger selection. I will have to comb through those sites a little more, seems as though keeping things on the North side of the 49th will be a lot less headache in the end.

If you list what your after, I can tell you if someone is already selling it in Canada. I build a lot of AR-15's, and keep in the know of who's supplying what.

It will explain everything you need to know about Brownell's exporting to Canada. In order to order a product the manufacturer has to register with ITAR. Many companies do not as they are too small to pay the fees. Brownell's is usually good about putting if an item can be shipped internationally or not in the description. You can order up to $500 worth or stuff without paying any export fees. The $250 fee only comes into play with controlled items, i.e. BCG, barrels, etc...

I won't say I'm after anything in particular, I'm looking to build my first AR "on the cheap" (I know, within reason anyways...). That said, it'd be nice to find an Aero Precision upper/lower to start with, I'm planning to build it over the course of the next few months, as I clean out the safe, etc. Thanks for all the insight so far guys, I really appreciate it.

Saskatoon Gun Works carries Aero Precision receivers.

When did they start charging the export fee on bolt carrier groups? I've ordered two this year and was not charged the $250 fee.

I have an aero barrel and you can't beat the quality and precision for the price, not even close.

I suggest that you buy locally or off the EE when a good deal comes up.
I know most of us feel that the local retailer is marking things up big time but I don't find the prices are that much worse when you consider the exchange rate, import costs, and the simple convenience of buying from within Canada. Without our support we may start losing some of our retailers which means less firearms availability. I know it's a fine line between supporting local and feeling good about being bent over the barrel and done without lube.
I shop around and find the best price and then look on the EE, if I can find it cheaper on the EE that's where I get it but if it's only a couple dollars cheaper than new I buy from the store. I don't care if it does say BNIB, I've seen guys post their rifle as BNIB with only 100 rounds down the barrel? Obviously not everyone knows what BNIB means, maybe it's brand newish in bag/box? lol.

Good luck on the build, be sure to post some pics when you're done.
