"restricted" that is! I do not own a rifle which fits into this forum but might soon. I am licensed for restricted and prohibited handguns but not for restricted rifles. Is it all about barrel length....magazine size...or is it just arbitrary like all the rest of the laws dealing with firearms? Thanks

Not true ... the prohibitions by name were arbitrary. Restrictions are more clear cut. The AR-15 is the only rifle restricted by name, regardless of barrel length. Semi-automatic, centerfire long guns are restricted if the barrel length is less than approximately 18.5" (I can't recall the exact length). Capacity of magazines made for semi-automatic long guns is limited to five rounds, and does not affect the legal status of the gun.

Your restricted PAL will allow you to own restricted long guns.

Bushmaster is the name of a manufacturer (not a type of rifle). The firearms they make are almost all considered "AR-15 variants" and as such are restricted firearms. There are many, many other companies that make similar AR-15 type rifles.

ETA: You NEED an AR-15, legal status be damned. You NEED it! Now go get one! See Questar for a good source of Bushmaster firearms (http://www.questar.ca/deals/Bushmaster.htm) or ArmsEast (http://www.armseast.com/) for the excellent and reasonably priced Stag Arms AR-15s.

O.K. - Why would anyone think that $1,450.00 is less expensive? I guess I'm just an "Old Fart". I think that if I'm going to go into this I need to be....... r-e-a-d-y. What do our troops carry in this day and age? Dave

Our troops are carrying AR15s although I believe the military designation is C7... and I think they're manufactured by Colt, but forget about getting one just like theirs, its next to impossible and way way too expensive.

Bushmaster, Stag Arms, DPMS, Armalite, Rock River Arms, Lewis Machine Tool and a few others are all great brands and top quality products. You'll be happy with any of them, and customization options are literally endless.

Also, why did you just say you "hate having another restricted on your licence"?

And as an example of what I mean by customization.... these two pics are actually the same firearm:

You can swap upper and lower receivers, barrels, stocks, sights, scopes, etc. etc. until you're broke and homeless, and its an addiction... so be careful but have fun :)
