I have an unrestricted 858. One of my favourite rifles. I was thinking of adding a shorty to the inventory.

So which VZ shorty..... 7.5", 11.75" or 15.5" would provide good performance? Probably using only Czech x39 surplus ammo.

A 7.5" is neat, but I can see that having a limited effective range. I'm sure he flash would be something too. Perhaps too short of a barrel for general practical use? I really have no experience with any restricted type 'shorties' so I'm curious what you more experienced fellows out there have found is optimum.

Since the 7.5" aren't here yet any idea of it's performance will be pure speculation.

From shooting my 11.75" I'd say it's pretty much a 200m gun. The regular length restricted will give you the best performance all-around and the sights are properly regulated to shoot to longer distances.

^^^what Stevo said, if you want to shoot past 200m.

If you do all your shooting inside that range go with the 11.75".

I'd like to shoot the 7.5. I bet it's really obnoxious!:D

I am also interested in this, I just sold my NR cz to get the compact as a fun toy and if SHTF, so what would be the effective range of the compact? Would I be better off with the carbine?

Yeah, that's the whole point of getting one! I don't imagine I'll shoot my 7.5" much after I get it. Who knows, it might be as useful as the 12" to 200m, but I wouldn't count on it.

I lost about 60fps per inch of barrel when I chrono'd mine (12" @ 2120fps). So if that's consistent, you might lose 450fps? So 1850 fps out of 7.5inches would be pretty decent if the velocity loss per inch is consistent.

The 7.62 x 39 is considered "under bore" for it's bullet size. Which means the total case volume of the round is a little on the small side compared to the size of the bullet. This is why it loses comparatively less velocity in shorter barrels than other rounds.

I'd say it would be a very decent out to 100m. It would probably be OK to shoot with the Dlask XB2 "Farting Beaver" or something similar which would direct blast forward.
