I'm building an M40A1 clone, and I don't know which barrel I should go with.
Which one do you think, and why it over the others?

Schneider 1x12 is what was used on M40A1(along with Hart, and the predecessor to the H&S 10X Barrels) and is currently used on current m40A3
Lilja's are excellent Barrels -I own a few on FCLASS rifles however if you are trying to build a faithful M40a1 Lilja's were never used

Like another gun, this will be corrected at a later date, but for now, it's one of these 3.

Rock Creek 5r barrel from Mike Rock. This is bar none one of the best barrels ever made.

LRC mentioned RKS barrels made by Ron Smith. I'm running one on my new precision 300WM rig being built for me right now. Will report on the barrel when I get the gun. However, I've heard nothing but good things thus I'm trying one out.

Hard to go wrong with the Lilja.

M40A3, as Ed mentioned, is using a 25" Schnieder. It is measured as 25" as the threaded shank on the barrel is not counted in the overall length. A military thing I guess.

I will be exceptionaly supprised if it doesnt make you go WOW! I've got one on my .300WM as well as the wife on Her .300WM. I know you will like it.

Rohann-

Your normal everyday barrel rifling features about a 90 degree angle between both sides of the rifling root. IE: Where the groove is cut beside the land is about 90 degrees give or take.

Rock Creek 5R barrels feature an angle to both sides of the rifling root. The angle between the top to the side of the rifling is about 45 degrees. This is reported to increase barrel life and improves the seal between the round and the lands, thus increasing velocity and reduces fouling. Some say it also results in less deformation of the bullet jacket.

Mike makes the barrels of Pratt & Whitney twin spindle hydraulic rifling machines.

The barrels shoot so damn well I don't care if he rifled them with a dull carrot! They just (no pun ROCK).

Dustin -

Did not mean to put you last as this is your post,,, (well I ended up editing the post so your not last!)

My choice is the Lilja barrel. I've never personally owned a Lilja but know several who do. Anyone I've known that has had one has loved it and had great life from the barrel. Very tight tolerances during the manufacture process and solid reputation behind the maker.

Given the above I hear Tedd is cranking out a good product these days.

LRC -

My choice was based on the advice of HWSNBN, as well as customers such as yourself who have had great success with his barrels. I figured what the hell, lets give one a rip!

My new Tacital Rig, to be built after the 300WM, will feature the venerable Rock Creek 5R, M24/M40 contour barrel. Just can't mess with the mojo!

Okay people, stop interjecting with other ideas. It will be one of these 3, period, full stop.

Dustin given the choices you made I already said Gaillard, and everyone else also gave you a suggestion so Lighten up. Its a forum and discusion. Seems like you already made you choice anyway so go ahead and do it and let us know how it works for you. If your going to go through life with tunnel vision your going to miss alot of learning oportunities.

RKS based on my experiance makes an awsome barrel, is Canadian and I have no trouble going that route.

Blackcloud Loves a Rock Creek and has had great success with them. They do a barrel for the M40 style rifle and being thats the route you want to go you should atleast take a look at Rock Creek. My understanding is they are also increadable barrels machined to extreamly tight tollerances and one I myself would considder using in the future.

Dustin - of the three that you have selected, the shooting properties might vary from barrel to barrel, but these two makers produce first class barrels. Desired finish might be a factor in selecting stainless or CrMo. You aren't going to Park. stainless. CrMo is better for bluing. If you are going to use a coating, it won't matter.
I like the idea of supporting a Cdn. maker, and you won't be giving up quality by doing so.

which barrel

Out of Dustin's list I'll go for the Gaillard. I own one in 260 and it's shooting great. why pay for a more expensive US job with the extra hassle of importing if you can do very well with a canadian product. mine shoots 1/3 MOA 3 shot test groups at 100 yds. It's a pretty heavy bull. I use it for F-class on a Rem700 action.

I'm not saying the US brands are not good. I have several Kriegers in 308 cal and a Broughton 5C (canted rifling) similar to what one of the fellows talked about but in 7mmSTW. This one shoots great too even if it's in sporter mag. contour. 3 shots then let it cool down. Broughton reports the same. Increased velocities etc...

Next one I get will be another Broughton. I liked the comment about the broadening of the mind. You can choose the one you want but it's good to listen to other's advise too. After a while you can tell who's sensible and who's not just by the way they say it ...

Luck and good shooting (It's all good or excellent anyways)
