I've used all of these barrels Dustin, and I would go with Gaillard, simply to support Cdn business. I have seen no difference in thier accuracy or durability. - dan

Yeah I've read up on it a bit, and it sures sound like a damn good barrel! How much do they go for usually? And are they the same "5R" barrels they put on US M24's? And it's the barrel that M118 Ball is specifically designed for...right?Blackcloud said:Rohann-
Your normal everyday barrel rifling features about a 90 degree angle between both sides of the rifling root. IE: Where the groove is cut beside the land is about 90 degrees give or take.
Rock Creek 5R barrels feature an angle to both sides of the rifling root. The angle between the top to the side of the rifling is about 45 degrees. This is reported to increase barrel life and improves the seal between the round and the lands, thus increasing velocity and reduces fouling. Some say it also results in less deformation of the bullet jacket.
Mike makes the barrels of Pratt & Whitney twin spindle hydraulic rifling machines.
The barrels shoot so damn well I don't care if he rifled them with a dull carrot! They just (no pun ROCK).
6mm Shooter said:What are you basing that on mbessey? If it lasted longer than stainless don't you think all of the serious shooters that go through barrels every year would use chrome moly.
mbessey said:im basing that on the fact that chrome molly is alot harder than stainless.. and people dont use it all the time because its very hard on cutting tools and very few barrel makers make it because of that fact.. its just an availability/cost thing that people use stainless.. stainless is great stuff... but chrome molly is harder.
interesting, what kind of stainless is usualy used in competition barrels?guntech said:I don't think it is availability ...the vast majority of Benchrest barrels(probably 99.9%) used in competition are stainless because stainless barrels last longer before the accuracy drops off and they button rifle easier...
Dustin said:it is harder, and makes for a better action than stainless, but for some reason, stainless seems to make a better barrel...

and is chrome molly hard or not compared to stainless? chrome is for sure...
id like a new barrel but always thought chrome molly was harder.. and should last longer??
