I am trying to narrow down what it the better buy. Trying the cheapest to buy and shoot other than the sks. I already own one and I find bolt actions more fun. I also own a model 70 30-06 and lee enfield and reload for them.

The new gun will be 99% plinking with a range of max 350m but most will be 100m. The 1% might turn into coyote hunting but probably not due to lack of free time.

I am thinking 223 because its the cheapest center fire out there and if I decide to reload another caliber (really don't want to) its super cheap.

Seems like the Remington 783 and savage axis are the best options mostly because of price point. I can flex a bit but I am not going over 600 total with scope. I would pick iron sights over a scope by the way but that does not seem like a popular opinion these days

Any recommendations on which rifle?
Ammo opinion?
Which is better of the two I have researched?

I’ve got a 783 in 223 with a vortex 6-18 crossfire 2 ontop and firefly bipod.

It’s a pretty good set up. I’ve put 600 rnds thru, with the last 150 being with the new scope.. I run Barnaul steel case 223 they it and it’s pretty adequate for what I does. Have slipped 5 shots in under 1” before, but it mostly runs 1-2” grounds. I’ve shot it out to 500 and hit 20” plates no problem. I like the 783 over the axis because it has a thicker barrel than the axis, think “semi” heavy barrel. Stock works good with a cheekpad slapped on it too.

Accuracy is decent. I’ve mostly ran steel case thru it. I’m really going to work on testing it in the next few months yeah. Great plinking gun. My buddy has proved it’s deadly accuracy with regular blue box on Charlotte deer a few times too.

Oh. I broke one extractor, but keep the chamber clean and oiled up and you should run into any issues

Scope was 280 in the EE and is so far decent ( eye fatigue at highest mag)

I would put a wtb up looking for a nice M70 or Model 700 and you might get lucky and find a nice iron sighted rifle for $550-650.

Savage Axis 2 in 223 , see if you can get one of Savages package's where you get rifle and scope together.

$600 with scope doesn't leave much room for quality.
BUT if you are set on cheap, may as well go Axis, they shoot good even though they leave a lot to be desired.
783 is too big/heavy for 223. Good for 308 and up.
