I hope to use my 99 savage in .358W for moose, deer, and possibly bear this fall, and am wondering which bullets to try. My initial thinking is that a 225 gr. spitzer would be a good compromise re: weight/velocity/trajectory. I like the Hornady Interlock, but they only come in 200 or 250...no 225's. Sierra has a 225, Nosler makes a Ballistic Tip in 225, and Barnes has its X in both a 200 and a 225. The Nosler Partition is recommended for contact velocities of 2000+ fps...a stretch for the .358 at its outer limits. Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions. What would/do you use and why?

The only bullet that I can seem to get decent accuracy out of my BLR in 358 is the 250 grain Hornady Round Nose. I have tried Nosler Partitions, Nosler Ballistic Tips, Barnes X, & Hornady Spire Point's in different bullet weights and have come to the conclusion that she just doesn't want to shoot pointed bullets...

Billy...Thanks.

Now that I know you're loading for a 99 in .358, I wonder if you have any recipes to share. My .358 is a clip fed .308 which was rebored/rechambered by Ron Smith and Corlane sports. Just got it back the other day, and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, though I do have some of those RN 250 gr. Interlocks on hand. It had a bit of feeding issue, which I think has been solved by fully chamfering the outside of the case necks, and putting on as much of a crimp as possible without crushing the shoulder.

.358 Win. Loads

My switch- barrel Savage likes Hornady 250gr.#3520 Spire points and BLC(2). Second most accurate is Sierra 225gr. and IMR-4895. Reading these posts, I'am kicking my ass for passing up a Marlin, and a Winchester in .356:(

Primers

icedog, I found accuracy was changed using different primers. Try both standard and magnum primers in your loads. With IMR powders CCI BR#2 produced the tightest groups. CCI magnums worked the best with ball powders/

My BLR likes the 225gr Sierra SBT bullet with a max charge of IMR4895 and has accounted for several Moose and Deer.
A very effective combination.

My Model 88 likes the Hornady 200gr Spire Points in front of IMR4064. That's the only bullet I've tried in it - I was lucky I found a load right away.

For anything heavier, I use my 350 Rem Mag with a 225gr Partition. Here Moosie Moosie...:D

Does the TSX (or any of the Barnes bullets for that matter) have a particular impact velocity "window" requirement to perform reliably?

Sierra 225's and either 4895 have been ok in mine. 225 Nosler BT is too long (oal) and have not tried the nosler partition in .225. I use Remington bulk 200 grain bullets for plinking.

My M70 like the Hornady 200 sptz over IMR3031, my M88 liked the 225 Sierra over IMR3031, I only took deer with them so far but haven't recovered any slugs, they expand well and have given pass throughs in every case, all have been lung shots. I want to try the TSX just for the heck of it, if it shoots well I will try it on deer this year not that I need it for deer just something different.

I also use the rem bulk pack 200 gr PSP and have had great results in regards to accuracy and performance but only on deer. I am going to try out the Hornady 200 grain in both the round nose and spitzer configuration this year.

"Why Not" and a few other Yukoners on CGN have expressed their view that the search begins and ends with the Speer 250 Hot Core. They say - cheap and effective - even when launched at 2150 to 2200MV at those big Yukon critters.

Probably something to that claim and worth considering for your 358 shooter.
