Which bullet is most accurate in German 300 Weatherby ?

I have a German 300 Weatherby Mag ( 1/12 twist ) & Weatherby Freebore.
I have tried 165 Sierra SPBT / IMR 4831 and 150 Hornady SPFB / IMR 4831 & IMR 4895.

I called Sierra and they said these guns don't like BT bullets because of the freebore.

A friend says he shoots 180 Hornady SPFB & H4831 with great results with his German.
I would like to stick to 165's as all I shoot is Whitetail.

What do you think ?

Any German Weatherby experience out there ?

No experience but if I got the tidbit that the Hornady 180's work, that would be the next bullet I would try. The deer won't know the difference.

Matter of fact, if it's the freebore causing the problems try 190's and even heavier. Heavier = longer in most cases and may be just the ticket.
 
Find a bullet with a long bearing surface and seat it out to within 0.020 of an inch from engaging the rifling. The reason why some boattails may not work is because they have a shorter bearing surface. In order to seat them out far enough, you may not have enough bullet left to be securely held in the neck.
 
An accurate bullet in one rifle is not necessarily the most accurate for yours. You must experiment with various bullets, powders and primers until you find the right combination. I would first check the rifle to be sure (a) the action and barrel are bedded properly (b) the scope bases and ring screws are tight (c) the barrel is in good condition, clean and not fouled. If all these things are ok you might want to try another scope as they sometimes shoot loose internally. Once you have done these things its time to do some load development. Correcting poor accuracy can be very time consuming - but sometimes you get lucky. By the way - what accuracy do you expect from your rifle?

Because you are a hunter you will be limited in your overall loaded cartridge length by the length of your magazine otherwise you will have a single shot rifle. Try some Nosler ballistic tips - they are accurate bullets and adequate for whitetails.

I would borrow a few rounds from your friend and see if you can duplicate his performance. If you can't then you have more problems than bullet/powder selection.

And keep in mind that usually a lighter bullet at high speed will do more meat damage than a heavier bullet at lower speed but with equivalent energy. Last fall, I used a 250 gr bullet in a 35 Whelen and the whitetail deer I killed had very little meat damage.

As far as I'm concerned, I would only look at lighter bullets for this kind of game if range was a big factor.
