Everyone picks their favorite. When it comes to ALL around hunting, I think you'd be hard pressed to beat a .30 cal of some flavour. The obvious choices being the .308 and the .30-06. For people only wanting to own one rifle, that is what I tell them.
That said, you could get anything from a 6.5x55, 7x57, .7-08, .270, .280, .308, .30-06, on up to the .35 cals and fill your freezer...
it all comes down to were you live .we can not hunt with anything bigger then a 270 so thats what we would most likly chose in southern ont it will work for moose as well as deer and yotes .if i lived in the far north or the mountains my choice would be a 30 cal DUTCH
Ide say the .308 but I would not want to use it on coyote personally. even a light 150gn hunting bullet will destroy allot of the pelt. A FMJ will kill it for sure and leave no big hole but that could be a suffering shot to the animal.
I don't know if ur asking because you want to buy a gun or just for kicks but if you want to hunt it all I would recommend you get two guns. A .223 for small game and coyote, as well a 7mm for all your big game.
That small game gun you could use a 22-250 as well but that round has some balls to it. Ive never shot a coon or porcupine with mine but I think it might destroy the animal a bit to much.
