which cartridge for long range?

FWIW I have two 338 Edge rifles.
One for general purpose hunting and the other is a 18 pound surgeon's scalpel for long range specialty stuff.
My belief in plenty of horsepower for hunting applications should be obvious.

If the 338's have a down side it is that they are twice as expensive to shoot as a 30 cal mag.....Something to consider if it is you only long range rifle.

I also own heavy tac rifles in 300Win and a fast twist 223.
As much as I like the Edge the 300Win is a very sensible long range hunting choice.
If I could only own one long range rifle it would be a 300Win.

does anyone have any comparisons of the 300 win mag to the 300 wsm?

I don't have a case drawing for the .300 WSM, but Hodgdon's online loading data suggests that the .300 WSM has perhaps 5 grains less powder capacity than the 300 Win Mag, and delivers 50-100fps less velocity with 220 grain bullets. So ithe 300 WSM's ballistic performance would be approximately the same as the .300 Win Mag (and any difference there might be, would tend to be a minor disadvantage to the .300 WSM).

thanks x-fan, sounds about right! does anyone have any comparisons of the 300 win mag to the 300 wsm?

Same poop different pile.

The WSM might have an advantage as a short range hunting rifle if you value short actions, but I personally could give a rats a$$ about such drivel.

The 300 Win pushes big bullets a bit faster, but in my experience way out where these cartridges matter that slight increase in velocity equates to pretty much a net zero advantage....Perhaps you should ask someone that reads the wind better?
Within reason I would be more concerned about velocity variation than actual velocity.

I like my 300Winchesters....They are reliable performers no matter what the platform. It feeds nicely too.

Those that want something new are welcome to it.
