anyone know which canadian retailers are currently selling non-corrosive 7.62x39 ammunition? I've been checking through our sponsors and so far nothing. Suggestions?
thanks

No one that i know of.
You might find some Federal hunting rnds at crappy tire but they are over 20 bucks a box.

There is a supplier here in Ontario that sells the soft point non-corrosive stuff for hunting. Accuracy plus in peterborough. I was there this afternoon and they had it in stock. Expensive however.

Go with corrosive, and just remember to clean your barrel after you've gone to the range and let a few off, it's cheaper and much easier to buy.

although so much cheaper, i'm worried about the extremely fast corrosion. I mean, if i cant get to boiling water and soap within a day of firing, the inside of the barrel rusts!! It's not like i can carry a kettle out to the bush

I take an SKS and corrosive ammo for some fun shooting when I go hunting in the fall for 2 weeks. When I clean my SKS after firing I use Windex or equivalent with ammonia to clean the salts off. Never have had one spec of rust ever. You could put some Windex in a small spray bottle to spray the bore and bolt then pull a bore snake and you should be good. Just be sure whatever window cleaner you use has ammonia in it.

I am lucky enough to live 5KM from the Stittsville Range, and the sell S&B x39 soft point for about $20 a box....if I remember correctly.

Epp's, for one. Federal loads 7.62 x 39 hunting ammo. Epp's is a Federal, Igman, Winchester and Remington dealer. Buying ammo on-line gets expensive though. Shipping costs aren't cheap. Call your local gun shops.
"...Windex or equivalent with ammonia to clean the salts..." Ammonia isn't required. Plain hot water will do nicely.

have you considered reloading?

i picked up 200 lapua brass from hirsch precision, and if i remember correctly it wasn't all that expensive and hornady 123 gr softpoints were especially cheap from a local vendor here in brandon:)

now i'm just waiting for a scope rail to come out so i can devise or buy some knid of brass catcher, losing all that brass in the grass is the only downside to reloading i guess.

btw, i bought 6 x 20 round boxes of norinco or s&b soft point, non corrosive at the last brandon gunshow, for 6 or 7 dollars a box, i guess it was a good deal:D

Bring a small spray can of WD40 or other good gun oil. Spray liberally into the barrel from the breech, after shooting corrosive ammo. Spray the bolt, bolt carrier and the inside of the receiver.

As well, remove the gas tube and piston and spray in them in and out. While you're at at, spray the inside of the gas port (that part fixed to the barrel, where the front of the gas tube fits).

By spraying with oil, you wash away some of the corrosive residue, but more important, you prevent the residue from attracting moisture. And if moisture has been formed, that WD40/gun oil spray will form a protective film on the steel surfaces. Remember that most SKS barrels are chrome lined (only the Yugos are not chromed), so you have some measure of corrosion protection there as well.

Clean thoroughly when you get home. No need to stress yourself over the risk of corrosion as long as you know the "mechanics" how it starts.

thanks for the replies everyone! Very informative! I guess I was a bit over concerned with the corrosion issue on my 858.
Regardless, I'd like to get some hunting ammo too. I'll look into Epps, and Williams Arms (dealt with Williams before, happy with them)
How many are typically in a box?

I did think about re-loading, but to be honest i know nothing about how it is done and what is required!

also - which out of these is the most recommended ammo brand? Federal, Igman, Winchester, Rem, or Norinco?

We are getting the S&B 7.62x39 soft point in next week. I won't know the price until it gets here. We will have some 7.62x39 soft point norinco non corrosive for $8.99 a box but there are only 20 or so boxes left.
