I have two commercial Mauser 98 actions and want to use one of them to build either a .416 Ruger or .416 Taylor. The first action is a FN, made for Husqvarna, and the second is a Santa Barbara. I am kind of leaning towards the Santa Barbara due to its full c-ring inner collar and possibly more modern alloy steel?

Any suggestions or advice appreciated on the action selection or cartridge selection.

The Taylor will work well with either action. If one of them is already a Magnum action go with it...

I believe the Husqvarna would be as good or better than a Santa Barbara in the steel. Both would handle the normal pressure range found in these cartridges The solid ring found in the FN and other some other 98 Mauser was often touted as being more desirable but there has never been a report of a action destroyed because of this feature.

I'm sure the Santa Barbara action would be fine but I'd go with the Husqvarna action for no other reason than its an FN - even if it has an H-ring rather than a C-ring.

My .375 Ruger was built on a FN action(actually a JC Higgins M50) that started out in .270 Win and it worked out great. Just find a good Mauser gunsmith. Bill Leeper did all the conversion work on mine.

Whichever action is picked, make sure the magazine box is at least 3.4" long.

Interesting fact is that Harry Selby's 416 Rigby, the one that readymade the 416 Rigby famous, was built on a standard length Mauser action. That would be an interesting bit of gun-plumbing to see.

My 416 taylor was a 30-06 Browning Safari, works just fine.
It's in the original stock, the barrel is a little heavier.
