Alright, I decided my next two guns will be a Tanfoglio and a CZ. The CZ will be first. Right now, I am trying to decide between the SP-01, SP-01 Tactical, and the Shadow. Gun will be modified as is permitted for IPSC Production in case I ever get time to shoot IPSC any time soon. Which gun would you guys get and why ?

I have a regular SP-01... I think if I was buying again I'd rather get the Tactical since I'd prefer to have a decocker over a regular safety.

Just personal preference I suppose.

I am thinking the same, that the decocker would be of more use than the safety (well, at least for IPSC).

My only major gripe is that none of the guns come with adjustable sights though I think I would prefer the Novak type sights on the Shadow.... any thoughts here ?

The standard decocker model has a firing pin block (which can be removed) and the trigger is inferior to the standard safety model.

This Shadow model is the best of both worlds, with sight upgrades and other goodies. Gets my vote.

Local dealer is supposed to have 2 Shadows in by later this week or early next. I am a first time buyer and have done exhaustive reading, and the Shadow is what I have landed on after trying everything I wanted to try except the M&P. XD's just do not fit me. Glock is too light for me. Ruger Beretta and a couple of others just don't quite have everything I want. Shadow does and I'm very much looking forward to owning one. Have only shot the 75B variant of CZ but it felt very nice in my hand. As did a 1911 style in 9mm I tried, but I'll save that style for my next gun, in .45.

OT, I seem to be over my flinch but now I'm pushing, which probably falls in the same general category - all 'anticipating recoil' related. Looking forward to putting a couple thou thru the Shadow and getting that all ironed out :)

The issue of safety vs decocker is a practical one, based on two considerations: if you don't feel comfortable manually decocking the gun for the first DA shot, obviously get the decocker. If you're ok with the manual decock, there's no advantage for that purpose to the tactical.
There is also the grip issue - the two safety mechanisms (safety vs decocker) are in slightly different places on the frame, resulting in slightly different grip styles (I mean the way your hand and fingers wrap around the gun, not the physical frame/grip). With the decocker, your strong thumb needs to sit lower; if you're used to an 1911 style 'high thumb', you'll be decocking the gun during shooting, haha, so you'd want to get the safety. This is an issue which you can only decide handling the guns yourself - every hand is different, you need to check this for yourself. I had students who preferred one over the other, others the other way.

With a decocker, you have a lighter DA pull (since it starts from half ####, not all the way down) - if you're really worried about DA, this might be a factor for you to consider. Some people are really not comfortable/good/etc with DA, again, this is something to be decided on the individual level.

Re shadow vs regular SP01 - well, if you'll want to put adjustable sights on it anyway (I have these, work great: http://ghostholster.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28_67&products_id=299 (but I took out the FO from the rear )), the sights which come with it aren't an advantage, so we need to look at other things. The fact that there is no firing pin safety means that (a) the whole trigger assemble is much easier to work with, and (b) it's much easier to take apart the firing pin assembly for cleaning/etc. The safeties are wider, for more comfy thumb rest. I think someone also said an extended mag release, don't know much about that.

So, my advice: the choice is between an SP01 tactical and the Shadow - there's no point in getting the regular SP01 when the Shadow is available. The the choice between those two will focus on how you feel about the location and the feel of the frame with a decocker vs one with a safety, and whether or not you need a decocker (either because of the lighter DA, or because you don't want to manually decock). That's someting only you can know...

Bought one today, Shadow. Can't bring it home for a few weeks yet (PAL waiting period) so no pics, I'll start my own thread when I can. Local Edmonton dealer/range, had 2 land today....the other one might be sold already too, at least someone was there looking at it. $852 + tax

I'm a beginner shooter, have put a grand total of about 400 rds of 9mm thru about 7 different guns over the last 3 weeks. I put 50 thru the Shadow today, used both magazines. No FTF or FTE using 115gr Bellot (sp?).

  • I was much more accurate and less inclined to push - my 2nd shot with the gun was a dead perfect bullseye, tho I'm still shooting generally an inch or so low, but in tight (for me) groups
  • the trigger is very very smooth over the break point, more so than anything I've tried
  • I really liked the F/O front sight
  • perceived recoil was very low
  • the rubber grips are extremely comfortable and a perfect fit for my hand(s)
  • fit n finish is great, it's very tight...the range officer had trouble getting the slide off in a field stripping demonstration. No visible marks or imperfections.

I am one happy banana! :dancingbanana: I'd probably have 5 or 700 thru it by Monday except I have to go out of town tomorrow until late next week :(

I have the regular regular SP-01 and love it,but if I was buying it again, I would go for the shadow(I all ready have added most of the shadow parts).
As far as the decocker is concerned, I have had my safety sp-01 completely apart several times with no problems.People tell me that some gunsmiths don't like to disassemble decockers. So if you like to work on your own guns it might be something to consider.

I've had both the reg and decocker. I prefer a decocker over a safety any day. Just personal preference. Also, the decocker version has "Tactical" on the slide, thusly making it 50X more deadly, and shoot faster.

I couldnt put the Angus hammer on the Shadow. I might be retarded however.

I go with the reg SP01 because of that alone.
