Which Dies, 357, 38 special

Any brand .357 dies will load 38 special also?

Was looking at some lee dies today, the gun shop stocked both 357 and 38, Guess I only need one set if thats the case.

get the carbide 38 special dies- you turn these up a notch to do 357s- it tells how to do it on the pamphlet that comes with- if you get 357's that's all you can do due to the slightly longer case- you can make a short longer, but not a long shorter- same deal in 44spec/mag- and be sure and get the factory crimp die as well

Get the .38 Special dies to do both.
I made the mistake and got .357 dies. Like t-star said, you can't make a long shorter. As I reload both, I now have a set of each on their own plates. Don't have to waste time time resetting dies, wondering what I ran through them last.....

yes, but a lot of other brands don't-therefore, he asks the question- he may get another brand than rcbs( budget) or get a used set from somewhere , and wants to get the right ones- there's an awful lot of lee dies sold for just monetary concerns alone-

Ok, thanks for all the replies.

I found a set of new Lee carbide dies today, they load both cartridges nicely. First time using a carbide sizer, works awesome, even with nickle cases.

seating

You can't seat bullets with the 357 die.

Get the 38Sp.

I bought the lee .357, was the only brand available locally, the seater die has tons of adjustment, seats the 38 special perfectly with a light roll crimp.

Guess it depends on the die brand, the lee sizer and seater in .357 work perfectly with the 38 special, expanding the case mouth is a little tricky with the 38, but very possible.

just be sure and keep those nickle cases clean- they can and do peel eventually- and they're tougher on dies- best to use infrequently or for "special " loads- by that i mean different loads like jhps or hps rather than your normal shooting ammo- best to get straight brass asap- the nickle ones can and do have the ability to scatch your dies

Good advice, I do use about 95% or better normal brass, just use a few nickle ones for the visual factor every now and then.
