I've never loaded for straight cartridges before, which dies should I get for these two cal's? Can't I get away from lubing if I use carbide dies? If anyone has some different tricks of the trade or things to watch for or do please let me know?

Thanks
Vince

Straight cartridges is all I've ever loaded. Never lubed a single case in 10s of thousands of reloads. I've used only carbide dies by Dillon and Lee.

I've used Lee 9mm (3-die set) and 40 cal (4-die set) dies, as well as Dillon 38/357 and 45 acp dies in my Dillon 550B (until I sold it). I have only used Lee 4-die sets for 38/357, 9mm, 40cal. and 45acp in my Classic Turret and Loadmaster. No issues with the dies at all.

Never lubed or trimmed a straight walled pistol case in my life. I use Lee carbide deluxe die sets in 9mm and 40 S&W. Zero problems.

I use and would recommend the Lee Deluxe (4 die) pistol sets. They come with a shellholder and do not require lubing of the cases. They can be had for $33.28 per set.
