Does the circle (extra twist) go in the bushing or back to the guide rod.

The other end is just a curly of the spring cut mid spiral.

actually, the ENDS are different diameters- it's the one that fits TIGHTEST on your guide rod that goes there- not all springs are "finished" as yours- my issue 1911 has 2 half cut ends only

The cut end goes into the recoil spring plug at the muzzle end of the gun, the flat or extra twist end goes to the recoil spring guide end. Some of the real old recoil spring plugs had little pressed in loops for the end of the spring to turn into ,to hold it from flying out when released, this must have been discontinued due to wartime demands for more guns.
