Hey all, I just got my pal licence in the mail and wanted to get into trap and skeet. I have been browsing around the internet for the right gun, but have no idea which one to get. Since this is my first gun, i dont want anything expensive and looking towards a pump since they are fairly cheap. Things I'm looking for is 30' or longer barrel, changable choke tubes and atleast 3' chamber. I have been thinking about a 870 in 30' that is on SIR(prefer to buy local), but couldnt find it on the remington website. Any info or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

this is oneof the 870 i know of that has a 30" barrel, but has only a 2.75 inch chamber

I saw that but it's a little too pricey for me, and also there's the 870 express fall flight camo model, but i dont want a camo, either wood or synthetic(black). This is the one I saw at SIR http://www.sirmailorder.ca/show_pro...43&PHPSESSID=c3c75aa208d0967886ade78327d9e74f my budget is around $500. Are there any other guns out there that will fit my budget?

Are you going to hunt with the gun or just shoot clays? Why are set on a 30" barrel. A pump or auto with a 28" barrel is the same length as a 32" O/U. I think a 28" would do you fine and be alot easier to find. I have a 26" Browning BPS that I've used for trap and skeet for years and have no problems with it. Actually I'm one of the better shots at our club.
Since this is your first gun and you are wanting to shoot skeet I'd seriously think about an auto instead of a pump. Shooting skeet double with a pump isn't the easiest thing and if your just gettign into things it would be good if you didnt have to worry about pumping the gun for that second shot. Used Remington 1100's can usally be found for around that $500 mark. New I think SIR has them for $649 That would be mine choice for you.

I have no plans for hunting and how is a 30" O/U barrel is the same as 28" pump or auto.??

Are the any other makers out there or is Remington is the best choice I got with affordability and quality???

Actual barrel lengthof the gun has very little to do with how it performs. It's the over all length and makes a difference in how the gun swings and points. A 28" pump/semi is rougly 3"-3 1/2" longer than a 28" O/U. It get the extra length by takeing into account the extra length of the slideing action. So your site plain and overall gun length is going to be the same as a 32" O/U. People think a longer barrel gun will shoot fast and pattern tighter than a shorter barrel gun and it isnt so. Shotgun shells have their powder completely burned in the first 24-25" of the barrel so the extra barrel length dosnt change the velocity. The choke part oft he barrel which doesnt most of the work in deptermening how tight the gun will pattern is in the last 4" of the barrel and has very little to do with whats behind it. A longer barrel will just smooth out your shooting style. Thats why skeet guns tend to be a little short than trap guns. the shorter guns is easier to swing through on the crossing targets with. While the longer gun helps with tracking the long distance angled targets in trap.
