which hunting rifle...

10/22 Target with twenty 25-round BC steel lips and as many bricks of Mini-Mag HP's that I can carry in a backpack. If not that a Ruger Mini-14 Target with a back pack full of Win White Box... if not that a Ruger Gunsite Scout in .223, again with a backpack full of Win White Box.

Zombie fantasy weapon of choice: SKS with a flimsy magazine pin, a couple crates of surplus ammo, oil filter catch can (don't want the hordes to hear you shooting their buddies) and a night vision scope to own the night.

I suspect the gov would forgive magazine capacity laws and suppressors if it ever did happen...

How well does SKS shoot beyond 200m (with the scope)?
Wikipedia says "Effective firing range 400 metres (440 yd)".
I am thinking about buying one and considering all options.
Can you actually hunt with it (if it is not precise beyound 200m)?

The people choosing ruger 10/22 or another semi auto .22 are choosing correctly.

100's of rounds of ammo can be carried vs heavier calibers.

When in a panicked situation going for head shots will be missed often despite what everyone thinks, the 25-110rnd mags allow for a large margin of shot placement error.

.22lr is enough to pierce the skull of the shambling undead horde(not sure of the effective range , i know ive watched videos of the various penetration maximum ranges, but i forget)

The ruger 10/22 is in itself a very light gun(varrying with stock/accessories ofcourse) making it a good choice for travel.

Although i dont know how well subsonic .22 lr cycles in a 10/22, its still a good option if you can find it so as to not alert distant zombies with the report.

As was mentioned, although not ideal .22 can easily, and was often in the old days used to take deer sized game.

I'd assume the government will be on their side.

I'd go with a ruger gun site scout for the simple fact that it holds 10 rounds and the magazines for it are everywhere, and .308 is a pretty decent calibre ;) if there wasn't that rifle then I'd grab a Remington 760 pump in .270 win magazines are plentiful in the stores I've been into and it has iron sights!

you guys are all wrong.

Zastava M85 Stutzen stock in 7.62x39.

Solid, rugged, reliable, lightweight, accurate enough for "Zombie Kill Shot" well past 100M with open sights (zombies further than that you can just walk away from).

x39 used to be a "big box and surplus dealers only" ammo, but I can't remember the last time I was in even the smallest of small town gun stores that didn't have crates of surplus and crates of hunting loads in stock.

I would take the Zastava over the CZ (which is overall a more refined rifle) for one simple reason: Internal drop floor magazine. In the ZomPoc, I wouldn't want to worry about dropping and losing a magazine in the dirt or grass, especially if I had to hoof it in a hurry.

Mini-mauser action, dead reliable, won't break.

At just over 6lbs, lightweight and easy to carry.

18" bbl - short and easy pointing without sacrificing any significant muzzle velocity.

Fires surplus and commercial ammo with equal reliability.

Just off the top of my head, of course. Not that I've ever spend days on end pondering the question and specifically bought the m85 to fill the need. I would never do such a thing and take a photograph of the evidence.

i'd take an sks and fill a truck with surplus ammo on stripper clips. quick loading, and it is not like you want a gun accurate past 100m anyway as you would be trying to avoid the zombies. Bayonet for close, metal butstock for too close
